reminders for RSVPs?

I haven't sent out invites yet, but I just wanted to know what to expect if it gets close to the RSVP date and I haven't heard anything from certain people. Do you reach out prior to the RSVP date with a "friendly reminder" or just let it be? Or do do you wait until the date has passed and reached...

    I'd wait until after the date, probably 2-3 days (mail can be slow this time of year). Then reach out.
