Rehearsal Dinner Dress Code?

I thought it was common knowledge that the rehearsal dinner is semi-formal dress wear? Is this supposed to be a casual event or??? I'm confused. Maybe I am just used to my family dressing up for important family events so I figured this was a given, but are any of you having a casual or semi-formal...

What makes a rehearsal/dinner semi-formal vs casual?

Just curious what other people do and what the "norm" is.

We are doing casual since we are hosting it at my FMIL's house with a taco bar.

@Kreestan, we had ours at a nice restaurant - women were in dresses, men in long pants and dress shirts. DH's bio father came cargo shorts and sandals. -_-

I guess it depends on the place that you are having it. Ours is a little formal, so I will be wearing a cocktail dress and FH will be in a suit.

I went to one last year that was bbq catered and pool party lol. Needless to say it was not at all formal and everyone loved it!

Ours will be pretty casual. We are also doing pizza for our dinner. With it being the end of January in cold Pa I just want people comfy.

Ours is very casual. I'm letting guests know jeans are totally appropriate. I want it to be a nice little hang out before we're in dresses & tuxes

I have attended two. (Didn't have one myself, since I didn't see the need for a rehearsal.) At the first one the bride wore sweat pants. The second bride wore jeans. There is no rule that says the rehearsal has to be super fancy.

It's not common knowledge at all.

Like every other social event to which one is invited, my choice of dress is based on the cues from the invitation and the chosen venue.

I have been to a pizza and beer RD at a bowling alley. You would look silly if you showed up in semi-formal garb.

I have also been to an RD in a private room at a 5 star restaurant where formal dress was appropriate, not semi formal.

What I mean by "common knowledge" is that if you are invited to a 4pm rehearsal and heading to a dinner at a nice restaurant afterwards, I think the common sense thing to do is dress nice?

I didn't want to say Casual because I know I will definitely will be dressed in a nice dress and FH will be in nice pants with a sports jacket, my MOH and BM's are also planning on wearing cute cocktail dresses. I didn't come out and say there was a dress code, but FW's mom asked so I figured the best way to put it would be "semi-formal". I am just a bit thrown off by her saying I was "fancy" by doing so because I thought it was pretty normal to have one lol

It really depends on where you have it. I have been to RD's where it was a more formal event. We wanted super casual. I wore a summer dress and H wore shorts and a Hawaiian shirt. We saved the formal wear for the wedding.

Definitely thought that if it was at a an upscale place people would know to dress more formally but apparently not haha. But same thing for me, my family and my groom's are the dressing-up-for-events type of families. Sigh. Totally depends where you have it though for sure! If it was a picnic I would think that would be obvious too though.

Ours is going to be casual. We're having pizza and I'm just wearing jeans and a white lace top.
