Rehearsal dinner dress: Any rules on color?

Kylene, on August 28, 2014 at 12:52 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 22

I am trying to find a rehearsal dinner dress and I can't seem to find one I like! Someone once told me that you're *traditionally* supposed to wear white/ivory, which I think is what's tripping me up. Is that really the case? I know I can technically wear whatever I want, but just wondering what the standard is?

Thoughts on what direction I should go if:

1. My wedding dress is ivory.

2. Our colors are neutral browns with a touch of baby blue.

3. Rehearsal isn't too formal -- at a yummy local brewery.

There are no rules - wear what you like, that's appropriate for the venue. I've seen everything from sparkly party dresses to jeans.

I'd wear a cute cocktail dress. Do you have a budget? Maybe we can find something.

Nah, there aren't rules on colors. I'm wearing a dress that has a peach-colored bottom and an ivory top.

Thanks for posting this - you just got me excited again when I realized how soon I get to wear this dress! haha :-D

Thanks ladies, glad to hear it's not mandatory to go that direction (was worried about the grandparents that will be present freaking out that I'm not wearing the right thing ... they would!) ...

@Shannon S, please feel free to throw up some ideas if you want to! I'd LOVE to wear a cute little dress though I think my budget is right around $100. But, I can always look at some of the less expensive stores in the area if I have some inspiration of the types of things to look for.

I like the idea of going more neutral colors and adding flare with accessories and shoes -- rather than a brightly colored dress ... and I just lost about 50 pounds and am loving my new confidence so something super flattering that shows off some curves would be great Smiley smile rather than the really flowy big looking dresses.

No need to post anything but if you're procrastinating on work, like me, I'd love some ideas!

Congrats on your weight loss! I found mine at Nordstrom Rack, they had some amazing deals. I decided to go with a black and cream lace dress because I have no lace whatsoever in my wedding dress. No rules though! Whatever makes you feel good.

@Staci, I didn't even consider Nordy's Rack. That's a great idea. We have some just down the road -- I'll have to check it out! And thank you! It's been a long process -- five more to go before I hit my wedding goal weight, but even if I don't get there I am so thrilled with the progress I've made.

I have no fashion sense beyond t-shirts and gym shorts, but I've seen a lot of girls on here recommend rent the runway. Sounds like a great way to find designer clothes at a reasonable cost!

TJ Maxx has been my bff recently. I found a realllllllly nice white lace maxi dress with swiss dotting on it. It was a size too small, but I would have totally worn that for my rehearsal.

ETA: It was only 20 bucks, too.

My MOH wore mint for her rehearsal, because it looks amazing on her skin tone. Wear what you love. You can save the white/ivory for the big day.

    Follow these rules:

    1. Be comfy

    2. Feel confident

    3. Stay classy

Usually a cute printed/simple sundress does the job! Smiley smile

Ha, I wore jeans and a comfy top to mine. However, our rehearsal dinner was in my parent's backyard and we had BBQ. I say you dress for the occasion and in whatever makes you feel comfortable.

Totally second Nordstrom Rack for dresses. H&M sometimes has some cute, cheap ones too.

Another vote for Nordstrom Rack! Although I found my LBD I used for our engagement pics at Marshalls.

No rules on colors... I just plan on being a Bride-Diva... and I'm going to wear white all weekend just because! No traditional considered... I just think it will be fun!

Do you all know Lisa-Raye?!?! She wears white all day, everyday just because it's her style! I'm stealing that notion for wedding weekend. So from Thursday, until we're on the plane fore the wedding weekend, I'll be donning all white!

@MizizAngi, sounds amazing but I really like to get dressed up so it's an excuse to do so! Otherwise, i'd totally be in jeans and a hoodie.

@TheFrankSpot, I like your style! That's one of the reasons I considered white/ivory for so long -- I'm kind of enjoying being in the spotlight for wedding (I'll admit it!) and wearing white only helps with that Smiley smile BUT, I'm not finding anything I love so I think I'm going back to color Smiley smile

@Alyssa, I didn't even THINK of Marshalls. I think there is only one in my near vicinity but I'm going to find it and check it out!

@Jess, I'm actually renting a dress for after my wedding (we're going out to the casino) and I'm so excited!! I looked to see if there are any rehearsal dresses I could use but I think for the style I'm going for, I can buy one for the same cost as renting (the ones on there I liked are like $40 and I think I can find that somewhere here).

Modcloth is my source for cute dresses.

Here are some fit and flare options, which would show off your waist:

I think you could also have some fun with making the venue part of your look - sneak in little accessories like these little beer mug earrings: http://www.fredmeyerjewelers.com/Products/1574060.aspx?cvsfa=4200&cvsfe=2&cvsfhu=31353734303630&gclid=CKaopqvTtsACFVJo7Aod7B0ALw
