Rehearsal dinner cookout? Hmm...

Lauryn, on December 17, 2016 at 4:16 PM Posted in Planning 0 47

So my older brother got married last weekend and had his rehearsal dinner at a steakhouse. Our dad footed the bill for 40 people and it was about $2,800. Granted I am down for a cheaper restaurant, I also like the idea of hosting a cookout at Dads house instead. It's a huge house, large yard and lots of space. We even have a fully furnished lower floor/basement with a game room and pool table, full bar, etc. I'd much rather save money and just have a cookout instead of going to a restaurant. Is that tacky? Or would it be okay? Mom also wants to make jello shots and is loving the idea, lmao.

I think it's be fun and it gives more time to socialize in a casual setting. I wanted to do the same to save money, but FH's Parents offered to host our RD at a restaurant, so we're doing that instead.

Its whatever makes you and your soon to be, happy. I would definitely do it. Id rather do low keep where you can enjoy yourself with the wedding party than something that may be uptight and not who you are. We are looking at doing out rehearsal dinner as a bbq onsite where we are getting married. Have fun and happy planning!

I think this would be fine if the rehearsal dinner is small (30 or less).

I'm not sure of the etiquette, but my friend did a "groom's supper" (pretty much a rehearsal dinner). It was in the bride's backyard, but it was low key and casual. I got to talk to everyone this way. I'm planning on doing a bbq at a park for mine, if it itsn't too gawd-awful and hot.

I think it sounds fine, but it also sounds like a lot of work.

This sounds fine but maybe have BBQ catering or something like that brought in? That will be a lot less work for you/your family.

We have about 40 people for our rehearsal dinner. I had my graduation cookout at the house and we had about 75 people. I also held an after prom party with about 200 people in high school which was (crazy) but fun so I know we are capable of doing it, I just didn't know if people would find it tacky or odd. I do like the idea of having it catered from a BBQ place though too so we aren't cooking! My brothers love to grill though and they offered, so do I just tell them don't worry about it?

Can your BP and their SO walk right in and be accommodated as if they were in a restaurant? It totally sounds like it! Go for it!!!!

I've been to one in a similar situation before and we all had an absolute blast! It was so much better for people to get to know one another on a much closer basis. I'm a huge fan of the idea. Wish I could have done it myself if I had a better space for it.

That's what we're planning on doing too. It's actually better because you have more time to socialize. We are having the food catered and grilling the meats.

The last wedding I was in had a rehearsal dinner at the brides parents house. It was about 30-40 people. There were hot dogs and burgers and beer and jello-shots. It was a really great time. The rehearsal church was about 15 minutes away so the drive wasn't bad and they had a few extra beds for people who had too much to drink or had a long drive. I'd say do it! I plan on doing it for mine.

My sister had a fish fry at her house for her rehearsal dinner. It was just parents, grandparents, and the wedding party (less than 30 people including SOs and kids). I don't have a problem with a backyard BBQ for a RD.

I think it's a perfectly nice and fun idea!! I definitely would recommend getting the food from a BBQ place though so your family doesn't have to worry about it and there is less hassle, but it will still save a ton of $$$$ and be fun

We hosted our rehearsal dinner in out backyard for about 50 guests. We had it catered by a "taco man". Everyone had a blast but it did take some work. Make sure you have enough seating for everyone. We also set up a bar in the backyard that was self-serving and that worked out well. Our family and guests still talk about how much they loved the rehearsal dinner.
