How much should a place setting cost? I'm stuck between two place settings. One is 70 bucks a 4 piece setting http://www1.macys.com/registry/wedding/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=444870&CategoryID=44026 and the other is 40 a place setting...

How much should a place setting cost?

I'm stuck between two place settings. One is 70 bucks a 4 piece setting http://www1.macys.com/registry/wedding/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=444870&CategoryID=44026

and the other is 40 a place setting http://www1.macys.com/registry/wedding/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=410062&PseudoCat=se-xx-xx-xx.esn_results

This may sound horrible, but I don't want to put place setting on there that are too expensive since this is what I'm the most excited about on the registry. So, I, uh, want to make sure I get them. I don't know how much flatware should cost either. In fact, I don't know much about anything!

It was actually listed as "fine everyday" so, I never considered not being dishwasher/microwave safe. Its definitely something to consider. Ahh, thats why I need you guys. I'm so clueless!

Check with the company that makes the dishes and ask if it's dishwasher/microwave safe. They should be able to tell you that.

Observations from my life: ironstone is HEAVY when lifting a stack of dinner plates up into a cupboard; gold, silver, or platinum designs on china or stemware will eventually melt off if washed in the dishwasher (may also spark in microwave); cups with a raised foot have a recess in the bottom that collects water in the dishwasher; fine china & crystal don't usually survive the dishwasher; sterling silver and silverplated flatware can not go in the dishwasher.

For everyday use, get dishes that are microwave safe and dishwasher safe.

When you use the "good stuff" for entertaining, either plan on staying up late to hand wash it and dry it while you're tired and wanting to get off your feet OR leave it for the next day when you're less likely to break something.

I'm going to register for Waechtersbach dinnerware - it's sort of like fiestaware but from Germany. It's very affordable at $30 a place setting and comes in a lot of different solid colors. Microwave and dishwasher safe, too, which is really important to me!
