Registry question (dinnerware and flatware)

Kiera, on June 4, 2010 at 8:33 PM Posted in Planning 0 24

How much should a place setting cost?

I'm stuck between two place settings. One is 70 bucks a 4 piece setting http://www1.macys.com/registry/wedding/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=444870&CategoryID=44026

and the other is 40 a place setting http://www1.macys.com/registry/wedding/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=410062&PseudoCat=se-xx-xx-xx.esn_results

This may sound horrible, but I don't want to put place setting on there that are too expensive since this is what I'm the most excited about on the registry. So, I, uh, want to make sure I get them. I don't know how much flatware should cost either. In fact, I don't know much about anything!

I personally like the first set better. BUT, these are YOUR place settings and I think that you should go for what you want/love.

    .

Ours is a little pricey as well, but we both loved it and if we don't get any, we don't get any. ::shrugs:: We don't entertain a whole lot anyway. lol. Here is mine: http://www1.macys.com/registry/wedding/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=417466&CategoryID=28943

    .

This what we registery for eating utensils: http://www1.macys.com/registry/wedding/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=241681&CategoryID=7919

I love fiiesta style plates and found these at bed Bath and Beyond. I love that it also has servingware and different styles of coffie cups with it. For flatware I not sure we made a choice yet. And yes the picture is square china I like being differnt.

I like both. They're both simple & you can add flair with food. Mine however is a lot pricier than yours, $140/5 pc setting. We're the same as heavnsnt128, we don't entertain often so it won't be a big deal if we don't get any.

I have an all white set that is martha stewart brand i bought years ago at kmart i think. i absolutely love it. it was an 8 place setting set for i think 50 bucks. included plates bowls and salad plates and i think cups, but i gave the cups and bowls to my mom. anyway, i love all white, i still use them, they are heavy and not easy to chip. havent broken one yet. Im not really sure why you would want to spend so much on something like this, but its up to you.

I agree with Juanita on spending $$$ for china. 2 reasons why we asked for the set:

    1. I love it

    2. our immediate families combined = 12 ppl & both of our mothers (including myself) like to entertain so I figured why not ask so the families can be at one house for events/holidays/etc.

Of course I could've picked a cheaper one but after weeks & months of looking, it was the only one I really liked & kept going back to.

    I like them both!

Honestly, $70 is pretty reasonable for a placesetting/wedding gift. I don't know that I would go over around $120....

A while ago I saw people had actually registered for ones that were $190 a setting!!!!

I think you're fine...pick whichever one you prefer!

Okay, this may sound stupid and not even something you'd care about, but the first one has a metal rim. That means it's NOT microwave safe. I have a set of china that has it and it DRIVES ME CRAZY. I refuse to have dishes just sit around and not be used, so we use the china on a day-to-day basis, but when I'm making something for my daughter or reheating something, I have to use our Corelle. I'm okay with that, but it's really annoying when all the Correlle plates are dirty and I have nothing to use in the microwave.

How many people are you inviting to your wedding? How likely are you in getting all the place setting that you want $40/$70. Of the dishes that you choose, which are you more able to afford to finish buying? Be realistic.

A lot of things I registered for were practical. I wouldn't buy an overly expensive item for myself so why expect one of my guests to do it? Being realistic as Mom N said is key.

Oh I never thought about the silver rim not being microwave safe...I mean its just like a pained layer right? Yikes, no way then.

I have 100-110 people invited. Honestly, I would pay 70 for a place setting, if it was something that would last. But, thats me. I think people have different opinions on what is overly expensive, which you guys are helping me get a good perspective on.

Yes, my question is am I going to receive 8 if I put them on my registry or will people shy away from them? I know for weddings i've been to, I bring a gift 0f 50-150 depending on how close I am.

Don't worry about the price. If you like it, put it on there. I didn't think we would get any of our place settings either, but 8 sets have been purchased from our registry already Smiley smile

Here's what we registered for: http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?order_num=-1&SKU=102899

It's possible it's just paint, but if there's any metal in the paint, it will still spark like crazy in the microwave. I THOUGHT the metal rim on mine was just paint and put it in the microwave when I first got it and it was like the 4th of July in my microwave! Luckily, no damage was done to the plate or the microwave, but it was still scary!

Register for whichever one you like most, but just know that some people will shy away from it if it costs more than they want to spend. But if it's something that you'd likely buy anyway to finish out the set, ask for the one you truly want. And I know people who will go in together to get one really nice thing as opposed to a couple tiny items, so you might have people who choose to do that as well if you get the more expensive set.

I have registered for everyday dinnerware and china for special events. People keep asking me why I registered for china (apparently not many people do anymore) and I say that I love holidays when my mom pulls out the "good" stuff because it just feels more special and thats what I want to do. all of the everyday has been purchased and only 2 of my china sets have been purchased so far.

Ok this is going to sound really dorky, but I LOVE dishes and silverware!!! for that reason we registered for a "more practical" nice set of everyday dishes - 4 place settings (I think 4 piece settings) for $60 total and registered for 2 sets for a total of 8 settings. We also registered for "fancy" dishes, but not the fanciest $60 per place setting for a 5 piece setting and registered for 4 settings total. We did the same for silverware! We have "fancier" silverware that we didn't register for as much of and then "everyday" silverware that we registered for more of. See pics below b/c yes I am also super excited about these!!!!!!!!!! Right now we have such a hodge podge of dishes and silverware that I can't wait to have all matching. And if we don't get them it'll be one of the first things we buy w/gift money.

Well, the paint/microwave explosion solved my problem! But, I guess, I'm kinda surprised that 70 is high for a wedding gift, I thought it was kinda average.

MNbride, I'm so with you, I'm crazy about my dining room. We spend a bit of time in there! FH is a great cook and he can put it away too! Those top pieces look like a set my mom had.

Meghan, remember that people wait until the last minute, it might get completed. =)

That silver rim is more likely to get damaged on your dishes than for it to damage your microwave. this is fine china, you should never put any of it in the microwave. buy a second set of casual dinner ware.
