Reception set up?

Jennifer, on May 26, 2019 at 10:13 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 9

Hi everyone - we are having our wedding at home, as we have a good bit of land. We are having the reception tented on an asphalt area (it was a tennis court way back when so it is the only level ground large enough for this!). I am struggling with detracting from the black asphalt - I wanted to do bar farm tables with gauzy runners, but have been told bare farm tables will clash with black asphalt! We are doing a white tent so white linens or speciality linens are out as the "vibe" is more bohemian and we don't want to look too formal. Anyone have thoughts on how to make this look good without just covering all the beautiful wooden tables with linens?

We still have the option of going clear tent but it will cost extra - what are yalls thoughts on a clear tent, would be worth the 1.5k price difference? We have lots of surrounding the area and on a clear night the stars are gorgeous!

Normally I would say this would be a waste of money but....
As long as the tent is pretty close to truly clear as possible then go for it. Tents can be fairly dark and with the asphalt I imagine even darker. You would probably invest a lot of resources (time, money, labor) into additional lighting for the white tent anyway. Like you said you have beautiful land and clear gorgeous skies to enjoy. I think it would be very special and a lovely site to see a clear tent lit up at night full of people celebrating.

Would a clear tent be hotter inside then a white tent though while it is still daytime out? That may be a dumb question but I could see that turning into a sauna with the asphalt. Regardless I’d save the money and go with the classic white tent. To me a tent is a tent and the vibe is based off of how you decorate the inside. Maybe you can rent some cool rugs to put under the tables to get the boho vibe

Like Emily said would clear tent on black asphalt be hotter? I'd go with what would be less hot in the sun, nobody likes roasting.
You could do linens only on the food tables and have matching centerpieces on the bare tables and food to be consistent.
As far as distracting from the asphalt you could throw down some cheap rugs, faux grass, or just have some potted plants around the edges. I don't think too many people will notice the asphalt unless it's super hot out.

Hi Jennifer! Congratulations on your engagement! It’s great to have you as part of the WeddingWire community!

I wouldn’t worry about the black asphalt. A black floor will be very neutral and as long as the tent is lit up, it will look fine. Have you thought about adding lanterns around the edges of the tent? It will add a lot of light to the black floor, and add to your boho style.

I think if you had white linens on the tables and then added a burlap runner in the center it would bring back that boho vibe you are hoping for. I know white linens seems very formal but you can totally negate this with what you add on top of it. I’ve added a couple of images of what this could look like.

I wouldn't worry about the black asphalt. But lighting is important! Can you string fairy lights up in the tent? With some colored drapes maybe? That would make a white tent fit more with your theme. People won't look down as much as they look up.

I would go with the white tent. Also, what if you did white table runners and greenery garlands running down the tables? I feel like that could help keep it lighter.

Thank you everyone! Our date is in october so we won't have to worry about heat - it will be nice and cool in the evening here. We will have lighting as a part of our tent package, they include dimmable LED's in "father of the bride" style, along with scattered lanterns. Think we will stick with the white tent, save some money, and go for undyed linens with gauzy runners in grey-blue hues w lots of greenery to keep it feeling natural. My father in law is repaving the area as it needed to be done anyways, so I am a little more optimistic about the asphalt blending in. Your input has been very helpful! Fingers crossed!
