Reception Only Question

FutureMrsMaidenName, on July 25, 2016 at 1:30 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 17

FH and I attended a wedding reception Saturday night at a golf course. It was a 4pm buffet dinner with a hosted beer & wine bar. The couple had gotten married up in Alaska the previous week and then came to MN for their reception.

My questions: Is it automatically casual for reception only? If it said 4pm on the invitation does it really mean it starts 30-60 minutes after that?

FH wore a suit and tie and I wore a knee-length, lace, coral dress, but when we got there about 75% of the guys were wearing jeans and short sleeved checkered shirts and most of the women were wearing either yoga pants or a very casual sun dress. Also, almost nobody showed up at 4pm. They mostly straggled in between 30-60 minutes after. I feel like I know nothing about wedding etiquette!

I wouldn't assume it would be casual at all. If the reception time says 4pm, I would assume it would start at 4pm. I think you did everything right.

Weird...I would have dressed and arrived exactly like you!!! Was there anything about the invitation or website that indicated this would be a pretty casual event? Maybe since it was reception only people were less concerned about what time they showed up?

I think it really depends. I am doing an at home reception myself, as I will be having an intimate DW ceremony, and have searched various blogs and forums. I have read about people doing parties as casual as a backyard BBQ to formal receptions.

Yoga pants? Seriously? Yoga pants are meant to be worn in a yoga class. Not to a wedding reception, no matter how casual it is.

I also wouldn't assume it to be casual. We went to a reception-only celebration, and it was very formal. The new bride, who'd gotten hitched a month before, was even wearing her gown.

@WWLynnie The invitation wording gave no indication that this was was casual or an "open house" type thing. It was worded as the bride's mom and dad and the groom's mom and dad request the pleasure of your company at the celebration of the marriage of their children...etc. FH and I just felt like we missed something while we sat there for an hour for something to happen lol.

I mean if it was THAT casual the bride should have posted something on the wedding website or included the info with the invite. It's strange that you were totally out of the loop.

@Who_MrsJones The bride was wearing her gown and the groom and bridal party all had suits and dresses on. Maybe it was just their circle of friends and family?

FH said he was surprised that they wouldn't have at least dressed appropriately enough to golf there.

It's crazy to me that someone would consider wearing yoga pants to a wedding reception. Unless the reception is being held in a yoga studio and a yoga class is a part of the celebration, then that is completely inappropriate. My mother taught me it's better to be the most dressed up person in the room, rather than the most casual (within reason and without upstaging the bride of course).

I would have dressed similarly to what you wore, and I would have arrived on time. That does seem very odd. I never would assume a wedding reception would call for yoga pants, that's for sure.

Yoga pants are for the gym!!!! You did the right thing and wore something a little more formal. I wouldn't have assumed just because the couple is already married that the dress code goes out the window SMH

Woah, yoga pants huh? I would have done exactly as you did. I would have shown up just before 4pm, in attire that I would typically wear to a wedding. (Since the invitation didn't specify otherwise)

Weird. Was it a small event? I wonder if it was spread via word of mouth or something that it was a casual type thing?

@JamieLynn I would estimate there were around 100 people there. I knew pretty much all of the bride's side and I wonder too if they spread via word of mouth to dress casually since most of them see each other/talk to each other quite a lot.

I also would have shown up on time and in a nice dress, like any other wedding. If an invitation says 4, that means something is happening at 4.

In my experience, golf courses have dress codes, and yoga pants aren't part of it. I'm appalled.

I would not wear yoga pants even if it said to. Yuck.

Yoga pants?!?! EW. I also would have done exactly what you did: dressed nicely and shown up at 4.
