Reception must haves

Nicci, on June 25, 2010 at 5:23 AM Posted in Planning 0 7

I'm trying to put together a list for reception music. During the dinner we are just going to have old rat pack type music playing (any favorites from that era/genre greatly appreciated!) as well as Michael Buble, etc. Wondering if there are any "must have" reception songs? DJ's more than welcomed to comment!! :-) Thanks!

We always have playlists set up on our website that you are welcome to listen to for ideas.

As far as reception, are you talking dancing? Every wedding is SOO different, so it's important to know your guests and what's going to work. What kind of music do your guests like to dance floor and will usually get out on the dancefloor for?

For the dinner portion, check out Diana Krall, Norah Jones, Frank Sinatra, Michael Buble (as you mentioned above), Ella Fitzgerald, Billy Holiday (LOVE LOVE LOVE "The Very Thought Of You"), Adele, Amos Lee, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Ray Charles, Peggy Lee. They all fit in well with Rat Pack / Jazz style music.

That is pretty much what we are doing for music! I will have a lot of nat king cole, frank sinatra, and even through in some more modern music that kind of fits the sound I am going for. The ww song lists are good to roam through too. When you find a sound or artist you like you can always look up other stuff they have made. =)

Must have music for YOUR reception is what ever you decide you want , it is your wedding afterall.

Check with the inlaws and outlaws for their preferances and include a couple of each but the evening is for your enjoyment .

Aparantly slipping the DJ 20.00 to play Highway to hell as the first dance at my sisters wedding was a bad plan, as her 5 year old step daughters put it BUSTED UNCLE GLEN........

    Nicci,

Sounds like you have a good entertainment plan. We usually play smooth jazz for the cocktail hour, love songs during dinner, and then uptempo music for dancing generally going from older to newer music with the volume coming up for dancing. For dinner, you can't go wrong with rat pack/Buble type music. For an evening wedding, include Sinatra's "The Way You Look Tonight" and "Summer Wind" for a July wedding. BTW, "Highway to Hell" is great dance tune for a wedding around Halloween.

Highway to Hell is our Recessional Song!! I've editted it to be at the course as soon as the DJ turns it on (since he isn't the real deal, just helping us out) & everyone is getting a kick out of it so far lol
