Reception Invites after private ceremony

Nicole, on July 24, 2018 at 5:33 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 12

Hello! My fiance and I are getting married in Barbados next May just the 2 of us. This isn't a surprise elopement but under certain circumstances it is the best option for us. We are however going to have a reception in my hometown after we return. What is the invitation etiquette for this? Thank you!

My future brother in law and his wife did this! Went to Jamaica to elope & honeymoon, reception when they returned. Their invites said something like "We got married! Come celebrate with us at our reception at XX". They did mother/son and father/daughter dances & speeches. They didn't have a wedding party though, and no cocktail hour.

Did they send the invites out after they were married? We are already planning the reception and it will be quickly after we return from Barbados so worried abut not giving enough notice.

Yes, but their honeymoon was 3 months before the reception. I've seen invites that said "We are eloping! Join us for our reception after at XX" so that may be more what you are looking for?

We did this and are getting married in August. The only difference is our wedding is being live streamed so people can log in and watch it live. We are having a reception 2 weeks after our return. We used Etsy and the vendor did a fantastic job on our invites and wording.

On another note- we invested in a wedding website to share details and information and I think this helped everyone feel more connected to our big day.

That is a great idea! Do you have an example of the invites? I'd love to see an example of the wording you used!

We're getting married in CO and then having a reception at home (MN) 6 weeks later. We didn't do save the dates, so im still sending our invitations at 8 weeks out. The front says "you're invited to celebrate the marriage of...." And then on the back it says:
    Mr & Mrs Snez
    Actual wedding date
    Breckenridge, CO

I second having a wedding website! We mainly have one to RSVP for the reception, but it was helpful to be able to make a note about a private ceremony, etc.

We are doing this in a couple weeks. Our reception invites said "join us to celebrate the marriage of..." we haven't come into any confusion yet.

If the reception will be pretty soon after Barbados I would send them before you go. It's actually becoming more and more common for people to have a very small DW and a local reception to celebrate. My coworker did this and my cousin did as well. Everyone expected us to have a local reception after our DW but we can't afford it lol.

I'm sure someone here has advice on the wording. I stink at wording things lol
