Reception help!

Elizabeth, on October 8, 2019 at 12:20 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 4
So for our reception, we are renting out the armory that my fiancé is based out of. Here is a picture of it empty. There will be tables set up and room to dance, so not worried about that. There is also a kitchen that isn’t pictured.

I’m not so sure how we’re going to “decorate”. I like that it’s open, we’re going to have favors on the tables that double as center pieces, plus I have a couple easels and signs too. Our theme is patriotic, but not over the top. Any suggestions? We will probably have to rent some backdrops or items to help, but was trying to avoid that as much as possible!

We found out we were able to have alcohol as well! One of his soldiers bar tends and we were going to invite him to the wedding anyways, so we are just going to ask/have him bartend. His uncle is a DJ so we are going to look into that too, instead of just having a playlist. I like the playlist idea, but having the DJ... he may be able to help with announcements and such. How does the bar thing work? Do we buy in bulk? We plan on paying him... but then just having an open bar or having a cash bar? What is the difference?

Thanks in advance for any advice/suggestions!!

I wouldn't ask anyone to work your wedding that you want to enjoy it as a guest. If you were going to invite the friend, don't you want him to enjoy it, or do you want him to be your paid help? There are tons of bartenders and DJs on Thumbtack, I would check them out. The difference between a cash bar and an open bar is who pays. Cash bar = guests pay, open bar = you pay. Cash bars are often seen as tacky, but especially so if you're the one buying the alcohol and then asking the guests to pay you for their drinks.

Thanks for the clarification. I wasn’t sure if it was supposed to be a cash bar if we provided the alcohol or not. I didn’t want to have them pay if they didn’t need to.

Also, he had mentioned he was already bar tending for another wedding and my fiancé was talking with him about it. We weren’t planning on having a bartender and just having the drinks out. If he did accept it, then we would pay. If he didn’t want to, then he was still invited to the wedding no matter what. Thanks for the input, though! I would like to think that they would enjoy themselves. That is the ultimate goal.

    Hey there, Elizabeth! Smiley smile

I'm happy you found a venue for the wedding!

Are you happy with the room as is space wise? Or are you looking for suggestions for draping? Or simply for some patriotic decor ideas?

Thanks!! Just looking for possibly decor. The ceilings are too high so I don’t think we’d be able to drape, but I was thinking there were like foldable “walls”, that could be used. I just can’t think of what they are called.
