Reception Ceiling

ShanClark, on February 25, 2015 at 1:21 AM Posted in Style and Décor 0 16

Okay so I am deep in the depths of planning a wedding from the other side of the country. I live in a really small and isolated town where I cannot just go out to the store and look at / touch / become inspired by something....I am banished to the land of the interwebs.

That all being said... I am frantically trying to find something creative / different to do to decorate the ugly ceiling in our venue (40ft by 70ft dropped ceiling). I'm leaning towards something with lights....to avoid the dreaded flourecent lights. I'm not a huge fan of up lighting.... and draping isn't an option. I like the look of twinkle lights or fairy berries...but can't find them at an affordable enough price.

I also had an idea of making and stringing together crepe paper flowers.... but seeing as I am 6000km away from our wedding venue, and will be until a week before the wedding... making hundreds of flowers just doesn't seem practical....

Help please!!!

What about balloons? All you'd need to do was get them filled with helium and let me go. I found this on the pinterest page "balloon ceiling" and I think if you were thoughtful about the color of the balloons, it could work.

I took flat packed crepe pom-poms from Australia to England. It can be done. Just allow yourself assembly time at the other end.

You could also put small lights inside the balloons before blowing them up.

Save the money....I can honestly tell you that I have NEVER looked up at a ceiling at any wedding I've ever been to and said to myself, "wow, thats a butt ugly ceiling. They sooo should have dressed that up!" or "Wow, that ceiling looks great! I love with they did with it!"

    Man, again Maltese, I agree.

This isn't a Wes Anderson film, no one's looking at the ceiling.

You're talking about a sizable investment of money and work. I'd leave it alone. I notice everything. I just realized that I don't notice ceilings unless they were made to be noticed (as in a domed, glass ceiling). The eyes will go the tables. Spend your time and money on those.

Agreed with the others that people don't notice, but I'm still doing paper lanterns just because I can hee hee. I found some used on a local site for dirt cheap in my colors. I like the look of adding some visual interest more than covering the ceiling.

Actually, another thought -- by putting up those twinkling lights, you are drawing attention to the ceiling.

That's what I was going to say - it just draws attention to it. Plus, if it's a drop ceiling, it's probably pretty low - hanging things would look kind of silly.

Not sure what you consider affordable but we purchased a 500 ft string - 15" spacing - of C7 light string (large party bulbs - about from www.actionlighting.com for about $140, then purchased 250 clear G50 7 watt replacement bulbs (10x25pk) form www.noveltylights.com - for another $140. What that got us was a 312 foot single line of party lights. We hung ours in a covered pavilion in a local park. I don't have any direct pictures of them but you can see them in the background of the attached photo.

We swagged them every other support beam and left the pavilion lights off. They gave off a great warm light for the evening. Perhaps you could leave the florescents off and use party lights similar to what I've described to provide as softer/warmer lighting. Might be reminiscent of a garden party.

The numbers I suggested would give you 4 passes down the 70 foot length of your venue - spaced out at about 8 to 10 feet. Down and back then down and back. Just remove the bulbs from the line as it crosses from one row to the other. There are shorter rolls available, but if you're looking for cover 70 feet several times, its cheaper to buy the 500 ft.

It worked well for me, now my neighbors are all jealous of my backyard party lights... Smiley smile

I am renting a villa and decorating the back yard with fairy berries, i also searched for weeks to find them at a good price. I found mine on alibaba.com. $26.50 for a pack of 50. much cheaper than a lot of places I searched. Good luck!
