Reception at a church fellowship hall.. DJ allowed or no??

countrybride*H*, on February 19, 2011 at 2:30 AM Posted in Planning 0 10

I know that some churches are strict on this issue.. and it varies between church to church. Out of curiosity, have any of you ladies had a wedding at a church then had your reception at the church's fellowship hall and had a dj or music (either from a playlist you made, etc)? I'm beginning to wonder because my cousin is DJing my wedding for free (as his gift to us) and I don't wanna let this go to waste, and the fact that I'm having such horrible luck with venues lately and my mom keeps saying that I absolutely cannot have a DJ if I have my reception in a church fellowship hall. If I did this, I would not have any songs with cussing or anything like that. RIght now I have a list of songs incase we manage to get an outdoor venue to where we can have whatever music we want and I have a church list jsut incase. What are your opinions or experiences?

I would speak to the pastor and ask what restrictions there are. We had our ceremony in a synagogue, but did not use the synagogue's social hall for our reception. However, if we had, there were no restrictions on the DJ. But of course, it really depends on the church and its pastor.

Ok thanks so much! I was thinking that as long as I kept the songs appropriate (songs without cussing and without a "dirty meaning" to them) that it would be ok. I even thought about making a cd for the pastor so he could hear the music and OK it himself. Thanks again! Smiley smile

I say go for it. It never hurts to ask. Worst he can say is no and then you go to your plan b and have it elsewhere, but I will say that you need to get moving. Your wedding is only 7 months away doll. Having it the church should save you a ton of money so I would def check it out

I know I need too, its just taken so long for each venue to get back to me and when they do I have to go and find another venue because price is always the problem. I've been trying and trying all venues I can think of in our area (most of them were a bust because they were way out of our budget.. their cheapest wedding package was more than our whole budget for the wedding) and I'm waiting to hear a final word from the last venue I can think of sometime next week. So if it falls through then I'm gonna start on my list of churches I want.

Mine is in the fellowship hall at our lutheran church, and the only restriction they have is the loudness for any neighboring buildings or houses. We are choosing to play mostly oldies and classic rock and top 40 but steering away from songs that would be club music for the older relatives. I'd say just talk rationally to the pastor and hopefully he'll be nice about this. Losing the free DJ would be very sad.

    Chelsea,

Hopefully this is one of those situations where you can have your cake and eat it too. Most professional DJ's (especially mobile DJ's who specialize in weddings) have "CLEAN" edits of the music they play... that includes today's hottest music. Don't discount a professional DJ... or at least find out if your "free DJ" subscribes to a music record pool that provides music "edited for content."

@Alexandra thats my thoughts exactly, my cousin has told me what he normally charges for weddings, and I'm very very grateful to have him do it for free.

@MCDJCarlos, my cousin does specialize in this, this is something he does on weekends, he's done weddings, proms, and homecomings, so I'm sure the would have all the edited songs as well. If not between me and FH we could get a cd together of edited songs if needed
