Really thinking about doing a DIY crystal belt.. Any pointers? (Pics)

Val, on April 18, 2013 at 4:27 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 20

When I bought my dress I was trying on crystal sashes/belts with it and i had found one i liked..after thinking about it, I thought there is no way I was going to spend $350 on a belt/sash.. My dress doesn't have rhinestones and i was fine with that, because I figured I can dress it up with jewelry.. Now I'm thinking I want a little sparkle on my dress..I want a thin one and not a thick one... I don't mind buying one that's under $100 but I'm having a hard time finding one so I figured I'd make it the way I like.. Where can I buy the crystals for it? There's a pic with the crystal belt when I first bought my dress and 2nd pic is my last fitting with out belt.

MICHEALS carries the accessories for DYI crafts by David Tutera. I just bought one of his bird cage veils. The line of accessories also include a bunch of beads and rhinestones. I bet you'd be able to find what you need there. Good Luck (Your dress is super gorg by the way )

I think that will be a really great idea twin. I actually bought my sash at the time I bought dress ONLY because dress was 1275 and my budget was 1500. But if not, I totally would have gave it a try. My belt isnt all rhinestone though.

Oh twin, sorryyyyy! I dont have any of me in it yet Smiley sad I ordered late. So, I am just about to begin the alterations process! But, I do have the stock photo...disregard the fact that the model is all tilted to the side in that akward position. The bottom is dimensional flowers, and since I am so short, we are going to lift the skirt and let it flare mid thigh rather than at the knees so I dont lose any of the skirt detail by cutting it. Hope you love it like I do! (lol)...and your dress looks amazing on you. Wish I had washboard abs Smiley winking

This is the sash...I actually DON'T like it much in the stock photo, but it was very eye-catching and unique with the dress Smiley smile

Twins, your dresses are GORGEOUS!!! Can't wait to see you all glammed up on our big day Smiley smile

I love the rhinestone sash look - I think it would add a lot to your dress, although you already look like a million bucks!

Lots of great advice already. Michaels has few belts premade for about 20-40, but if you want to make your own you can use satin blanket binding or ribbon without wire (depends on the width you want for the belt. Glory's House on ebay http://www.ebay.com/sch/gloryshouse7/m.html?item=400458221397&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5d3d2b8755&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2562

carries a lot of different designs for mostly under 40. So you could just go and match the one you tried on with your dress and duplicate. I'd say to not just glue, but hand sew for added stability, but if you don't sew, use fabric glue that's flexible and washable.

There was a post a couple of weeks ago about a bride sewing her own bridal belt in one night. I can't remember who or what the title was, but I think she posted in the comments how she did it.

Here is an idea: Pick a rhinestone beaded trim in whatever style you like best. Buy some quality satin ribbon (1/2 yard should do it) use Aleen's fabric glue to fasten the rhinestone chain to the satin. If you buy thin satin it will not show at all, but it will keep the rhinestones secure. (You could do white ribbon to match your dress or pewter/silver or whatever your colors are... purple right?) I like the idea of the white but you could also use tulle if you want it completely invisible. You can wear it as a sash or add fastener hook to the back if you want it to look seemless. We made this for my MOH.
