Re dipping a ring?

Mrs.K, on September 12, 2016 at 8:18 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 12

I have an old ring from my grandmother that is really pretty, but set in yellow gold. My engagement ring is white gold...i was thinking about getting my grandmothers ring sized and using it as a wedding band but not sure ill like the two colors together...has anyone had a yellow gold ring dipped to look silver? Ive heard it can be done but wears off quickly...

Can you post a picture? Mixed metals can look good together.

Rhodium plating. My mom does it to her ring. It does wear off but I'm not sure how frequently you would have to get it dipped.

My dad is a jeweler. He once gave me a yellow gold ring that I thought would look better white. He had it dipped. It looks great! You just have to be careful not to use harsh chemicals because the white can turn back to yellow.

I wouldn't change a damn thing about your grandmother's ring.

My ring is 14k white gold which is actually yellow gold dipped in rhodium. I get it redipped at least once per year.

We talked to a jeweler about this for Fh ring. He is using his grandfather's band.

The jeweler told us that we can do it but it will basically have to be redipped every year or so.

The ring is actually at my parents house (I haven't worn it in years because it's too small) so I can't even try it on at the moment.

I might try it on and love the mixed metals, I just wasn't sure if dipping it would be a realistic option if I decided to go that way.

If not and I don't like the way it looks with my e-ring I will just get it sized for my other hand!

@Carriemichelle...my first thought was to take the diamonds out and reset them into a new band...so I think that potentially getting it dipped to match my e-ring is a far better option than that.

And really i wasn't asking whether or not I SHOULD do it. Only if it's an option.

White gold is not just rhodium plated yellow gold. White gold has a different mix of metals than yellow gold, to give it its "white" color. It is rhodium plated to help prevent it from getting scratched up and looking worn, because due to the high silver content, it tends to be softer.
