Random question about bustles

Mermaid, on March 12, 2017 at 10:08 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 13

....are they temporary or permanent? I'll attach a picture of my train in the comments.

I LOVE my dress the way it is. But even I don't want to be tripping on the train and risk busting my ass during our first dance at the reception. So, is there a way to bustle a dress immediately before the reception, instead of having it bustled the whole time? I'm just really confused by this concept, and I want it to be "unbustled" for as long as is practical.

Bustles are (typically) something you do during the day. Many people have their train during the ceremony, and then after exiting, and pictures, the dress gets bustled. Bustles help avoid you tripping over it, but also help your guests from not stepping on you throughout the night.

My dress is a large ball gown, the bustle is held in place with some buttons and my mom and sister will be bustling it after our ceremony and pictures.

No it's not permanent. It's basically buttoning up your dress so that you don't trip. It can be undone.

Usually the dress is bustled after photos are done, and before the reception.

What all other pps said. It's just buttons. Make sure they're done right and secure. My friends bustle snapped in the very beginning of her reception and her train was ruined in no time.

Thank y'all! I'll definitely be getting a bustle, then. I was so concerned that it was a permanent thing.

    Congratulations and beautiful gown!

I was having 'bustle understanding' issues myself lol. From what I understand you leave your train as is through the ceremony and photos. Right before your entrance to the reception you bustle It.

I was concerned about my bustle being too bulky (I personally hate bulky bustles...they look really tacky to me) and so I am having a sheer overlay on my gown that will flow past the bottom of my gown as the train and be a very simple/dainty/almost unnoticeable bustle.

Good luck with whatever you choose to do with your bustle Smiley smile Smiley smile

*Bring some large safety pins in your/your MOH's emergency bag. At my sister's wedding, her bustle kept snapping & falling from dancing-either the loops wouldn't hold the weight of the train or the buttons would loosen throughout the night and droop down. By that point, no one will notice/care about you using pins, but it's definitely a good idea to have some on hand just in case!

Also, alterations department of your salon should have ideas for the bustle options (over/under, etc.)

My bustle from my first wedding was not buttoned. It was tied up. Still did the job. I think it depends on the seamstress doing the work.

If you decide to get a bustle, ask your seamstress about options. My train was heavy and had several layers, my seamstress did not use snaps or hooks for 3 of my 5 pickups. She hid small ribbons and a small loop on the dress so it could be tied. It saved my dress from tearing and from getting stepped on and popping snaps. I didn't love bustles but I love how mine turned out! I had the bottom half of the corset reconfigured so it would lie flat and not have a snap over the bottom with the bulky material so it changed up how we did the bustle.

    That's a great tip, @Amy S.

@ssomero, your bustle looks great! I haven't seen any that I'm particularly crazy about yet, so maybe I need to see one modeled on my dress.
