Raising Money

Emily, on April 4, 2019 at 11:37 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 25

My FH and I are paying for the wedding ourselves and we have substantial careers, but what are some ways you guys raised some extra cash for the wedding/honeymoon fund?

I’m not sure what you mean by “raising money” since that sounds like a charity event. We based our budget off of our current savings and what we could realistically save each month leading up to the wedding. We cut things like frequent dinners out, started packing lunches for work, and found more budget friendly date night ideas.

I sure hope you don't mean that you plan to "raise money." LOL. Most of us are paying for our own weddings. For me, I am just planning the wedding I can afford. I suppose some ways you could make some extra money would be to have a yard sale or something like that.

I did lots of overtime and he already had a lot saved up. I agree with a garage sale to earn more money

Raising money? Sounds odd. I feel like the majority of people pay for their own weddings; I know we are. We worked overtime & put a certain amount towards the venue each month.

Have you looked into part time jobs? Pet sitting, babysitting, raking leaves, etc.?

Sell Avon, pet sit, babysit, yard sale, if you’re crafty, do a craft day sale. With spring and summer, people are always looking for someone to help with yard work/ spring cleaning. If you want to actually “raise money” you can do a casino night with family and friends or a tricky tray event?

I’ve been putting in as much overtime as I can get away with. I did also consider doing post mates or DoorDash but luckily didn’t have to thanks to family help.

We've cut out a lot of unnecessary spending, like eating out, Starbuck's, etc. Also FH has been working a bunch of overtime, and I'm going through my closets and getting rid of stuff I don't wear, don't use anymore. Selling on FB marketplace and craigslist. I have also considered Door Dash, but haven't had to do that yet.

Right now we're just putting away what we can every month, and trying to get the best deals/prices on all of our wedding stuff.

Every pay check we put $5 or whatever we wanted into a jar. It’s added up and helped tremendously for our honeymoon expense!

We budgeted out how much each month we can put toward the wedding, and are additionally putting anything that we consider "free money" (basically non-paycheck money) into our wedding fund. Birthday cash, christmas cash, tax returns, income from side jobs (I teach theater workshops and he's an all around handy man and prop builder). I also sold some clothes that I don't wear and put all that towards the wedding.

I recommend looking for a good bank to open a savings account with because a little interest can sometimes go a long way. We have ours with Ally Bank online.

We budgeted how much we could put away and that told us what we could afford.

We "raised" money but putting money away.

I did a freelance gig on the side (graphic design/website). We also saved all of our "change" and put it into a jar.

I considered getting back into bartending on the weekends. Serving and bartending are both easy ways to make money fast, but they are hard jobs. I wasn't able to since I am also in grad school, I just couldn't find the time.

One thing we've done to help pay for the honeymoon though is we both signed up for a credit card where if you spend a certain amount within the first 3 months, you get a bunch of airline miles. We are paying for at least one way for each of our honeymoon flights with points. Helped us save money we can now use elsewhere. We are using these cards for wedding expenses only since we already have the money saved to pay them back.

I have money from my direct deposit going into basically a vacation club savings account at my credit union. I’m not making any more than usual, but it’s putting it into savings where I can’t see it or use it until the year is up without me even seeing the transaction. Even just putting $100/week aside is going to add up and I don’t even notice it missing from my paycheck anymore.

Not "raising" nothing but my FH does scrapping for a side thing and whatever he makes is going towards our wedding fund.

We have been putting cash in a jar at home. It's pretty old school but it's a way to have extra funds for any unforeseen expenses. We did figure out a budget and have been trying to stay within that as much as possible. My fh and I are paying for our own wedding also.

I wanted a big (only 80 people but big as in everything i wanted) wedding and I spent last year working 12-15 hour shifts at the hospital I work at &then when he got a new hob I started working 40 hours a week again because he makes more than enough for all bills ( we live together already) so I have literally been using my entire paycheck every 2 weeks to pay for my wedding lol. almost done now Smiley smile

My FH and myself put $1000 a month into a separate “wedding” account. It’s easy for me because im a bartender so my paychecks are direct deposited into that account which is about $1000 a month and I use my tip money to pay bills. I had a traveling nurse Airbnb our spare bedroom out for 2 months. Hated that but gave it a shot. Generated about 2,000 bucks which I used for my dress. Our wedding is a little over 20k which is good for California. I also sell anything I don’t wear or use on mercari... I’m about to start picking up extra shifts Bc I’m 5 months out now from the wedding

I've been doing online surveys to earn points i'm turning into gift cards. I've been doing it for many years. I can cash in for Hotels.com for the honeymoon, or go with Amazon or Walmart cards for the decorations and other supplies. Right now i'm at enough points for a 100 card. I"m shooting for 200 or more
