"Quirky" weddings - or a thread for those of us who don't always quite fit!

People often ask what style your wedding is, or the 'season', or something like that!

Well, DH and I didn't quite have a style, nor were our colors very seasonal... and, while we did have a theme, it wasn't exactly an *expected* wedding theme.

Instead, our wedding was a theatre/Phillies/nerdy affair on the river in his city looking over at my state. Basically, we tried to make it as US as possible, which is to say, weird!

So, let's talk having a wedding that's a little... different. Maybe it reflects your shared passions, or your unique styles, or maybe it's just that tradition isn't your thing, so you made your own! How are you incorporating what you love into the 'standard' wedding, or are you making something up entirely from scratch?

For inspiration, when I said we had a theatre wedding, this is what I meant:

...We had a sword fight. We probably spent as much time, if not more, on choreographing, rehearsing, and planning this bit, than the rest of the wedding combined. (It does help that we are actors, our friends are actors, and also choreographers, and *we are all trained in stage combat* ... please don't do this if you aren't.)
We did this, in particular, because when DH and I act together, somehow, he is the bad guy, and my character has to beat the snot out of his. So, we wanted to approach our wedding day as a TEAM, and fight bad guys *together*. Our friends happily played the bad guys. Basically, we staged a small show to open the reception!

Ah, but I mentioned PHILLIES? (That would be our baseball team. They are actually the losingest franchise in the history of all sport. There is no team on EARTH that has lost as many games as our team! YAY TEAM!)

CAKE - note the baseball threading, with bonus comedy/tragedy masks, and our toppers, which would be the Phanatic, our team's mascot. Well, ok, THREE Phanatics, a pitcher, a batter, and (toppled over), one in a tuxedo.

A friend made this sign for us. That's DH's childhood stuffy, and you can see how we made our decor out of half 'baseballs' with flowers in them. (Our colors were red, blue, and purple. Red is the main color of our team, with blue as an accent... it's also DH's favorite color. Purple is the combination of those two colors, and also MY favorite color.)
Our officiant was a dear friend of ours, who customized the ceremony to reference baseball, Harry Potter, Star Trek, Shakespeare, and so many other nerdy things (Dr. Who? Princess Bride? There was a LOT.)
Invites were themed to our team. The corset lacing on my dress was red, like a baseball, our seating chart was done as if each table was a lineup card, and, *I KID YOU NOT*, DH's vows started out referencing his catching gear! (That's all right, mine specifically named the dates our teams have actually won things.)

We put all this into a fairly traditional wedding format, because we wanted the familiar to surround the new and different. Rather like a theatre - familiar setting, new ideas within it!

Tell us how you are making your wedding quirky and uniquely you!

I love how much you incorporated your passions into your wedding! I'd say our biggest quirk would be that we're planning a surprise "jam sesh" during the reception - FH loves metal and plays a couple instruments (and so do some of his friends and my relatives too!), so we're planning on busting out some blow-up guitars to jam out to a couple of his favorite metal songs!

Friends of ours also did a first fight instead of first dance! Our friend is a black Smith and made their swords.
As for our wedding, we have everything nerdy. We are big D&D players so lots of that incorporated. A princess bride wedding cake topper, all types of video game sound tracks playing through dinner. All centerpieces have dice and little dice games inside of little wooden chests. My husband made all his groomsmen swords to carry and I made all my bridesmaids wands for harry potter. Our friend and Dungeon Master married us starting with "mawwidge" from princess bride. Our bridal party will walk down to the jurassic theme park song. The list goes on! I wore a crown from one of my favorite vendors from the Renaissance faire, we also bought personalized glasses from our favorite renaissance faire vendor. I also am wearing a cape instead of a veil. Ah! The list goes on!!

    ...I was wearing a corset.

I was a little more concerned with his dress shoes, but pants aren't the problem in fighting, if they fit.

Aww, that's so awesome! I love the idea of doing something different.

I can't say we're doing anything super quirky, but I do love rabbits, so we have a number of bunnies hiding amongst our wedding things. Including this cake topper:

and these little ornaments to sit on our card table:
