Quick path to engaged

I feel like I am always reading articles that say you should date two or three years before being engaged (which was not my case, at all). Did anyone else get engaged under the "recommended" time? We have been dating for three years, living together for a year, we got engaged in Dec 2016 and we will be married in April of 2017, so that is very quick not exactly the "recommended time".

My fiancee and I dated for nearly 4 years before getting engaged but I knew she was my person from the start. I felt that itch to get engaged after about 1 year of dating but we waited it out. As much as I wanted to get married then there was still so much learning that I had to do about her and about myself.

We got engaged around 1 year of dating, talked about it and saw he was shopping for a ring a few months prior to that. We are both in our thirties and were totally comfortable with it. My parents got engaged after 3 months (but with a 3 year engagement) and have been together almost 40 years. I had a couple cousins tell me that they thought it was fast (though they got engaged shortly after and had dated for >5 years), which I thought was extremely rude. I didn't tell them to hurry up and get married when they were celebrating their 7th dating anniversary.

FH and I got engaged 6 months after we met... we made it a long engagement (18 months) so we would have time to prep for his move to the US and plan our wedding. We are both in our early 30s and have had several long-term (over 5 year) relationships. We both knew very early on that this was it!!

Everyone is different though. I definitely wouldn't have been this confident in deciding to get married 10 years ago.

My FH and I were friends for two years before he officially wooed me into dating him. I knew that if I agreed to date him, I'd end up marrying him. We got engaged at around 14 months of dating and will be married on our 2 year anniversary.

4 months after meeting, FH moved in. 8 months later he picked out a ring n we got engaged 5 months later.

Normally I would never share a home with someone so fast but I was well established n knew if things didn't work out, I'd be fine. All good Smiley smile Wev've been engaged for 4 yrs as he went back to school/wanted to finish up his degrees first.

I'm glad I waited. We met when I was 19 and he was 23 and got engaged when I was 25 and when he was 29. We're not the same people we were 3/4years ago. We dated for 5 1/2 years before he proposed.

FH proposed after 8 months exactly. In the past, I would've felt like it was too soon, but I feel differently now. My grandparents were together for 6 weeks before getting married and never split. It just depends on the relationship.

We met in January 2015, moved in together in November 2015 and started talking about marriage. He proposed in November 2016 and we will be married in July. We just had our 2 year anniversary last month. But my FH drunkenly told me he was going to marry me about 2 weeks after we met, he was right!

FH and I were together for 7 years before we got engaged, but will only be engaged for about 9 months before we get married. We were so ready to get it done! A short engagement worked best for us :-)

One of my best friends started dating her now husband and then like a week later they were engaged, 4 months later they were married. But they had also known each other as very good friends for about 10+ years.

I think FH were officially engaged shortly after being together for 1 yr, but we had been talking about marriage and related topics and planning our future together only a few weeks after we started dating (we had known each other for 2 weeks as friends before that). Waiting until the yr mark was more of a formality for our parents (his mostly).

We dated for 4 years before getting engaged. We've been engaged for almost 1.5 years! Everyone is different and some people know right away and some take time.

My parents got married about 4 months after they met and just had their 35th anniversary! And my dad was only 23- they are major outliers, haha.

My FH & I got engaged a little over 1.5 years after we started seeing each other, but I have been in one relationship where I would've gotten engaged just a few months in. Glad that didn't happen, but it felt right at the time.

FH and I waited 4 years to get engaged, it was a little longer than I would have liked but he always envisioned himself being in his 30's when he got married so that was the compromise. (We're both 26). I think every relationship is different and there are a lot of factors that affect how soon you move forward. (i.e. if you want babies in marriage, how soon you want babies, whether your relationship is physical before marriage, maturity levels, cost of living in your area, career & financial stability, etc.)

My friends parents are Mormon and they got engaged after 3 weeks. They told their families at 1.5 months and were married at 3 months. They have now been married about 30 years. According to her dad, he knew what he wanted and her mom checked all the boxes!
