Quick Monogram Question

Jamie, on March 8, 2013 at 1:50 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 23

I am having button down collared dress shirts made for my bridesmaids with their monograms on them. I would like one for myself. We will wear these during getting ready day of my wedding. Do I get my new name (taboo) or put my old monogram on it.

I would get your new name. I don't really understand the whole monogram taboo thing, but you're wearing it the day of your wedding -- if you use your maiden name, it's pretty much instantly outdated.

Collared shirts are going to be kinda hard to get off over your hair and makeup.

Have you considered some other item to put the monogram on?

    Robe?

oversized Men's shirts? or is that what you meant by collared?

Love the look..... I'm the Reenski..... I don't see a problem with it, and I would say go for it.

Just be sure to put a spider in your dress to counter the luck.

It's already your wedding day at that point...so I don't think it's bad luck.

Get your maiden name - you shouldn't use your married monogram until after the wedding.

If it's bad luck to use your future name before you are married, I'm screwed. I started using my new last name when I signed up for frequent buyer cards up to 6 months ago.

@Bittsey, why? Seriously, I'm curious as to this bit of superstition and why she should spend money on something that would only be correct for a few hours before her wedding and wrong the next day.

I would use your new name.. sorry, I never stated my opinion clearly. For the exact reason Just Reenski said. The other option is instead of monograms, can you use first names on the back part of the shirt underneath the collar? Or is that weird?

LOL ~ Lizz ~ we lived together and I sent out our Wedding Invites with Return labels with our Married name.

I got clear labels and didn't want to toss away half the roll after the wedding, so just used our married name.

I don't see what the big deal is. Do what you want. If you want to wear the shirt after your wedding, put your married monogram.

For me it's not so much superstition as it is poor etiquette. There is no rule that says you can't use your maiden monogram after you are married, and those pieces (the jewelry at least) often become heirloom pieces.

It is GOOD luck to find a spider in your dress the day of your wedding.

So, that is a spider charm.... instead of a real one.

Bittsey, I respect that if that works for you, though I disagree. If she were running around for months beforehand, that would be one thing. But for a shirt for the few hours the morning of her wedding? Go with your married monogram.

DEFINITELY get your new monogram. I quit making things with my current monogram back when FH and I started dating since I knew it would change soon Smiley smile I wouldn't use it after the wedding with my old monogram...

I had zip up hoodies made for me and my girls. There's had the first letter of their first name monogrammed since a few are getting married soon. And mine has my BRAND, NEW, SHINY monogram on it Smiley smile)

I don't get the whole good luck / bad luck thing. Marriages don't last because of luck. They last because you married the right person and put the effort into your relationship.

Superstitions and old wives tales are probably one of my wedding pet peeves.

My vote is for married name - it's practical.
