For those of you with long or hyphenated last names, how big of a pain is it? I'm thinking about changing my name to a hyphenated one when I get married, which would be 6 7 letters long. Will that cause trouble when filling out forms etc.? Any other hassles I should know about?
I'm a bit traditional in some ways, so I always assumed I'd take my husband's last name. Right now, the combo of my Anglo/American first name and Scandinavian last name is fairly unique, so when you google it I come up. I wanted to make sure that my name would still be uncommon with FH's last name and.... nope, American Idol contestant
So now I'm thinking of hyphenating MY last name, and our kids could have FH's straightforward last name. This way, the connection to FH and my kids would be obvious in our names, but also it would still show my family too. As a bonus, that name IS totally unique, which is nice in my field (science) because it makes it easy to search for publications.
