Question for Latina/Filipina Catholic Brides: Arras & Lazo?

Katrina, on September 16, 2013 at 5:13 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 9

So I am marrying into a Latino family and FMIL has requested that we do the arras (13 coins) and lazo (rosary) traditions as part of our ceremony. I am perfectly willing to do the lazo, but the arras seems kind of sexist and outdated to me. Also I have no idea who would be our sponsor(s) for these items.

So, why did you or will you do these? or why not? and who were your sponsors?

Every time I read about Latino traditions on WW, I feel more and more like a coconut.

Most of my Filipina couples (either entirely or partly) do cord/veil/coins. It's probably no more outdated than anything else, tradition wise....

Maybe instead of the groom giving the bride half the coins, you could each take half of them and pour them together into a little bowl or basket, signifying that you will share all the attributes of a good marriage with each other?

I LOVE THIS QUESTION! I too am marrying into a Latino family with strong Catholic traditions. We chose our Madrina and Padrino because we caught the bouquet and garter at their wedding 5 years ago. The traditional role that they play is that they provide any financial support or help in any way in case your parents are unable. It is sort of like Godparents. They will place the lasso over us during the ceremony usually before or after the vows depending on your Parrish and/or priest. The coins is a lovely old-school tradition about the husband "holding the money" for the family and providing for his wife financially. I agree it is outdated and if it does not sit well with you then you don't need to include it. Both traditions are not dependent on each other.

@mc, you've confirmed that a. my husband needs to stop calling himself Catholic, b. my father should do the same, and c. we barely qualify as Puerto Ricans. :::hangs head in shame:::

I like the Spanish traditions. I can see where one Who works would not like that at all. What about your wedding vows are you taking the obey vows? Are you having someone to help pay for the wedding because that would be your madrina and padrino arias. Otherwise I would stick with the Lasso only

@Celia- I like the idea of us both being involved with "handling" the coins.

@MJ- Definitely NOT having the obey vows in there. Smiley smile My parents are paying for the wedding, but this tradition is completely unfamiliar to them and while they would probably be willing to do it, I don't think it would be as meaningful for them.

Thanks for the comments. Smiley smile I think I'll ask FMIL to do the lasso, and FH and I will do the coins together.

Obey? Wow, in about 800 or so weddings, I have never asked anyone to obey anyone else, lol!

Some brides ask me to take out "obey." I tell them that was the first thing I did when I started officiating weddings!

Sometimes a groom will jokingly ask if "obey" can be in the vows. I always tell him "Sure, I'll have you say it."

I officiated one wedding where the groom was Russian. The bride's mom was American and her dad was Spanish. They incorporated the coins and the lasso.

I'm having my FSIL and her BF sponsor the arras and my cousin and her hubby the lasso. It's tradition. I'm sticking to it.
