Question about using a "fake" cake for the cake cutting

Brittany, on May 22, 2011 at 6:23 PM Posted in Planning 0 7

My mom mentioned something she had heard about using a fake cake for the cutting. It's Styrofoam decorated like a cake with the exception of one piece. The real cake piece would be using for cutting and feeding each other. She said you could then have sheet cakes put on plates to serve the guests. As anyone done something like this?

I have heard from many brides that this can actually be just as expensive as just having a regular wedding cake made. Of course that depends on how ornate of a cake you are wanting as well. But, if you get a price comparison and it is worth it than I would go for it.

Um, wow. I have never heard of that. I have heard of getting a smaller cake for like a couple hundred bucks for the table and cutting- and then having a sheet cake... but I don't really like that idea so much either. Is it just a budget concern? Have you gotten quotes from multiple vendors to compare pricing?

As cake design gets more and more complicated, this is being done more often by couples who want to keep the budget reasonable. The cake itself is fully, even elaborately decorated, but only a small portion of the bottom layer is actually made of cake. This is the part you’ll cut into in front of your guests to feed each other. The rest is Styrofoam. Then, you have simple, iced sheet cakes in the kitchen that you use to serve everyone. It saves a huge amount in costs of making and transporting the cake, it takes less time to serve, will have far less waste, is easier to pack up if you have leftovers, easier to fit several square pieces in the freezer for your anniversary. Also, your cake will look perfect all the way through your ceremony and reception. The best part is that your guests will never know the difference.

Here’s an article about it. Smiley smile

I was reading a David Tutera book called Big White Book of Weddings and he talked about using a fake cake.
