Question about plates on reception tables

Joyce, on April 4, 2020 at 1:03 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 7

This feels like a silly and mundane question right now, but I really am wondering about this.

I love the look of stacked plates on reception tables, with the napkin and menu etc., which you see all over Pinterest and Instagram. I know that the majority of these setups are just styled shoots, but I really like the look and chose my reception china and decor with that look in mind. However, I'm doing a plated dinner service, and the caterer has said they need the plates in the kitchen in order to pre-plate each course so they can serve everyone in a timely fashion.

Has anyone had stacked plates on their tables? What kind of service did you do?

Any ideas for how I can get the look I'm after with a plated dinner service? Should I just order double the amount of plates? Before you recommend chargers, know that renting chargers from my caterer is like 3x the cost of renting an extra dinner plate, so I'm more inclined to do that than do chargers, which are only on the table for the salad course anyway.

I’m zero help because we just did chargers and then they put a plain white dinner plate on top for each course. Our chargers were on the tables for the entire time though, not just the salad course. This is what our tables looked like before guests sat down. If you don’t want to do chargers I would just put a napkin and menu where the plate will go Question about plates on reception tables 1

Will there be a plated salad at the table when the guests go to sit down? If so, you could play around with napkins and menus using the salad plate. The other option is to purchase your own chargers. They’re incredibly inexpensive!

We used chargers for our centerpieces - we got a stack of them at Michael's for super cheap.

Would it be strange to have the dinner plates set with the menu and napkin on top, and then have the servers remove the dinner plates when they served the salad plate?

That would be a little inconvenient. Why don’t you want to get the chargers? It will look just as good as on Pinterest. Question about plates on reception tables 2

That style, while nice, wouldn't work. I don't like the acrylic/plastic chargers, and the glass ones are quite expensive to rent ($8-10 each). My settings look like this minus the charger, and with a blue glass and a dusty blue napkin. If I did a charger I would do the one pictured, but again, too expensive.

Efavormart.com sells chargers fairly inexpensively. Your guests won't know if they're glass vs acrylic.

What did you end up doing?
