Question about cups - how many do I need.

GrayCatVintage, on April 28, 2014 at 11:54 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 13

We are going to start interviewing with caterers in the coming month. I already know different caterers offer different cups/plates/silverware depending on the company. This is my dilemma:

I already ordered plates for the meal, dessert, and appetizers as well as plastic silverware for about 150 people. I did this because our original caterer only was going to offer el-cheapo FOAM plates (they break and I hate them) and black silverware. SO I raided Dollar Tree. IF the caterer we choose offers chintzy cups (like solo) I will want to order hard plastic (we cannot use glass at the venue). If there are realistically 120 people at the wedding, how many will I need?

The idea was to have ONE GLASS at EACH place setting with a cute straw so people know to reuse their one cup, then have extras at the bar for beers since the bartender will be serving that. I DO NOT want people to get the idea that they can get a water, throw the cup away, get a tea, throw the cup away, etc.

Are you doing kegs instead of cans for the beer? I think most people will use two cups anyway, even with the cute straw, if there's an alcoholic and a non-alcoholic option. So I'd plan on a water/tea cup and a drinking cup per person at the very least.

Is your bar not offering cups for drinks - or are they the solo type cups you don't like?

I did something similar where I went out and bought dinnerware bc I didn't like the caterer's options, but the bar has plastic cups for drinks and I'm leaving that alone. One nice glass for the place setting and then whatever they get at the bar will be plastic.

The general rule of thumb is three of very thing per person. So, that would mean 360 cups.

If you don't want ppl to throw their cups away, I'd probably put a cute label where they can write their name or something like that. A straw may not be enough.

Straw or no straw, people will not keep their cups. You need three or four per person.

I would say between 3-4 per person as well. People will set down their glass when they go on the dance floor, forget where they put it, and then need another one.

I was in the same situation until I came up with the idea to have mason jars with handles as one of the wedding favors/ drinking cup of the event. They will get their mason jars at the beginning of the cocktail hout to which they must keep with them and take to their tables and use all night. I'm still in the process of coming up with wording to display on the table so guests will know. I will be providing plastic cups to the smaller kids so I will not be getting more than 25 cups for that reasons.

We are also using disposable and I think people will throw their plastic cup away (or leave it at whatever table they are at), walk up to the bar, and have the bartender hand them a new cup. I am not exactly sure how many cups you will need but I would rather have extra then run out.

I am pissed because we were not aware of the "100% no glass rule" until after we booked - the original coordinator said something about glass center pieces and they were okay and we could also have glass toasting flutes if we did a champagne toast...but then it came out that we cannot use ANY drinking glasses OR MUGS. I am not buying 400 freaking cups...I guess it will be red solo or nothing.

At least 1 drink per person per hour. We bought nice 9oz clear cups from amazon with free shipping.

Can you buy them in bulk and return any unopened packages? Or keep the extras to use at home afterward?

I also think 3-4 per person will get you in the ballpark, but you could buy one nice glass (for water) to leave at the place setting, and have the bartender give out whatever cups are included. @ the mason jar idea-- what if people want a glass of water AND a glass of wine? Do you have to choose lol? When I'm at an event, if I leave my drink unattended (bathroom, to talk to someone, whatever), I throw it out because I don't know what happened to it while I was gone. I would definitely rather have to use plastic cups all night than be stuck carrying around a glass jar and be limited to only one drink.

Wasting is a major peeve of mine...the way I see it is if we were allowed to have real glass, we could get by with one glass for each person then extras for beers from the bar. I feel like guests will "waste" a ton of cups because of the fact they are plastic. I want so much to avoid this lol!
