Push back wedding or have commitment ceremony

My ex's attorney screwed up our divorce and the proper papers have not gone through for the divorce decree yet. Our wedding is suppose to be in 53 days, unsure of what to do. All of this was suppose to be finalized 3 months ago. Do we go ahead and have reception then get married when papers come...

Are you sure it won't be done in time? I don't know what state you are in, but if you can get it finalized by the courts (And the attorney that screwed up should be pushing this or risk being sued) when mine was final, my attorney said I could ba e walked down the hall and applied for a marriage license. And you might be able to get a rush license if you go before a judge.

Im also a little concerned about the divorce only supposed to be finalized 3 months ago........im assuming if you are getting married and planned this huge wedding you've been married while dating your FH... It didn't come up before now?

I'm one of the people that don't care if someone isn't getting legally married and not telling their guests but I find it really weird to have a commitment ceremony while still legally married.

First off, my ex to be had a girlfriend before he left the marital home. I would be up front with my guests. I have been calling my attorney n court house, everything was in order until a court clerk realized the issue and brought it to my attorneys attention. I did not start dating my fiance until 6 months after my husband left with girlfriend. There is the story

Are you sure it can't be dealt with in the next month and a half? I'm not familiar with this sort of thing, but if it can be expedited, that might be the best route.

But @cheryl a, regardless of all of that, where did you think your divorce decree was?

If you didn't have it in hand (tucked away somewhere that you keep all of your other important papers) weren't you after your attorney for that paperwork?

Call your vendors, explain the situation. I'm sure this isn't the first time this has happened and they might be able to work with you. Don't make a fool of yourself in front of your friends and family, parading around in a wedding gown and reciting vows that literally will mean nothing.

Sorry to be harsh. This is my honest advice.

@Nancy D, that's not how divorce works if there's any marital assets to divide or any kids involved.

This is probably a really good example of why it is a good idea to have your divorce decree IN HAND before you start planning a wedding! I am glad you agree with the PP's who told you to be honest and not the ones who suggested you lie to your guests by having the officiant get creative.

All this being said...what State are you in? What information exactly is the Clerk looking for? You may be able to get this baby finalized and get your license in the next 53 days. Seriously. I would work that angle really hard before contacting vendors.

Also...don't worry about your ex's attorney at this point. Call YOUR attorney.

My attorney is trying to get this worked out, his attorney being a personal injury attorney won't take his word for it n wants to find everything out on her own. also it was told to me by a judge once in court house it takes 30 days for finalization which we thought was going to be 3 months ago.

I would push it back so that I could have the full experience of my marriage ceremony.

It seems weird to me that there's nothing your lawyer can do to speed this up. I'd be following up daily with your lawyer, his lawyer, the retirement account people, and anyone else to keep pressure on them to get this straightened out.

Be a PITA with his attorney. You call her office. Have your attorney call her office. Have your attorney write a legal memo to the other attorney outlining what she needs to do, with legal citations.

Sounds like there is time to get it done, if someone lights a fire under a certain ass. Get lighting.

Can you get a refund or credit on the venue or anything ? How many people are attending?

Its hard when you put all this money down and now this happens. I would have recommended you wait for the ink to dry since I don't think they will even issue you a marriage licence untll 90 days after everything is completed (at least in MA)

I'm not sure what I would do if i was in your shoes.

If your wedding date on here is correct OP, you have 45 days, not 53...

But I wanted to say you might call the county clerk tomorrow and see there's an expedited process that you can use.

    1. If you lie to guest and they find out they will be upset/mad. 2. So when your anniversary comes and you want to post on social media would you lie again and say "1 year ago today we got married!" Or would you go with the real date and confuse the crap out of everyone that attended your wedding. FBIL was in this situation and thank God the papers went through in time!

Commitment ceremony. It's too late to cancel. Under these circumstances I agree you did everything you could. Keep calling the lawyer though.

@Nancy, you cannot get divorced in Las Vegas unless you're a Nevada resident.
