Publix Cake-what would you think?

Kara, on November 1, 2016 at 10:55 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 42

Our budget doesn't have room for a traditional tiered cake for 80 people. My plan was to do 3-4 different 1/4 sheet deluxe cakes from Publix. This would cost 100 dollars max vs 300-400 for a traditional cake.

These cakes will be fantastic tasting no doubt, but what you think if you went to a wedding with sheet cakes displayed?

It seems a little odd. I'd cough up the other $150 or so for a real cake from Publix. We paid about $250 for a three tier that fed 80ish, and that was with a few upgrades.

Their wedding cakes are really nice, and so delicious. Here's ours.

Why not get something like a 2- tier displayed but have a large sheet cake or 2 in the back to be sliced? I'm sure 2 tiers is cheaper than 3 or 4. Not sure how it'd look to have sheet cakes on display. Me? I love cake so I wouldn't care!

Are you planning to have them decorated? I found this picture of individual cakes. I think you could make something work with round or square and it still have the 'wedding' presentation if that's what you're wanting. Obviously the cakes would all be the same size unlike the picture but you can still dress it up.

I like the picture @Bobbi posted of the individual cakes if you can swing it.

Either way, I don't think I'd mind because I love cake.

Publix was the only way to go in our eyes lol. We are having a 3 tiered cake that'll feed 77 people for around $250.

If it tastes good, I'd be fine with it.

I think they do wedding cakes- tiered cakes. If not but a pretty decorated round one from them and buy extra sheets to give away

I would buy a small round cake to cut into beautifully decorated and leave the sheet cakes in the back

I personally would prefer to see something a little more "wedding-y" than just typical sheet cakes (I just associate sheet cakes with birthday parties) so I agree with others that you can maybe have two sheet cakes in the back and have a simple cake on display that's cute (think of the pictures too) and that way everyone still gets a piece of cake and it'll look nice

We had a cute and small three tier cake and we kept some sheet cakes in the back to be served as well, and we got them from Costco. We got so many compliments on how delicious it was. No one seemed to care that we served sheet cakes and only had a small tier cake for display

I love publix cake and think this is a great idea. I think I it's silly to waste money on a fancy multi tier cake that will just be cut to pieces.

I'm a cake girl, so I love checking out the cake when I go to weddings. I would be disappointed for about 2 seconds that there was no pretty showpiece wedding cake, but that's about it. Are the sheet cakes you're talking about layered with filling? If so, and they look and taste like regular wedding cake once they're sliced, no big deal. If it's just a regular single layer slab of sheet cake, I would think it was better suited for a birthday cake or office retirement party or something, rather than a wedding cake.

There is nothing wrong with a sheet cake for guests, especially if it's delicious! My husband and I had a small display cake that was a tad bit fancier, for the cake we cut. Then the caterers cut up Costco sheet cakes (we had a few different kinds) and gave those to the guests. Costco cake is SO good, people loved it, and we had tons leftover. To me, the taste of a cake is more important than the looks of it. I've been to weddings with super fancy cake, but all the fondant or decorative whatever outweighed the scrumptiousness and taste of it.

I would say get something smaller to display and serve the sheet cake. Nothing wrong with that at all, I have been to a few wedding that have done that!

Side note: Publix cake is amazing. If I didn't already have a baker acquaintance who has made several cakes for other events for me, I would be using Publix!

I don't think it matters. It's your day - do what you want and can afford.

Just do one smaller cake to cut so it still looks like a wedding cake then have sheet cakes in back to slice for everyone

We don't have publix here so i have no idea what it tastes like but i've seen people do a small round display cake and have the sheet cakes in the back to be cut up and served-- no one has to know where you got your cake from.
