As wedding season gets into full swing, I'd like to remind you that hand cancelling your invitations at the post office is a no-charge service. I just dropped mine off and the postal employee tried to charge me $0.22 per envelope to hand cancel them. I told her my FIL was the former district manager for USPS and asked her to show me the postal regulation. She came back with a book and started to read, " ...if the customer chooses to manually cancel.....however it is not subject to the surcharge." I thanked her, and asked for a bin.

Hand canceling can be done for the stamp, however they will still be run through machines to sort them.

Hand canceling is typically done when there is are embellishments or items in the envelope that can be damaged by the machine. Guests will rarely notice if the envelope was hand cancelled or not. Most people will not save the outer envelope, either. I still plan to have mine done, just because.

I just stuck them in the mail. A machine cancel won't change the content of my invitations. We have simple invites, nothing 3D, and an RSVP card/envelope.
