Protecting Artificial Flowers

Jo, on May 1, 2019 at 1:50 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 6
Hi, I'm making my own flowers with foam/real touch ones. I bought white calla lillies a few months ago and they went yellow. I'm in Vegas and wonder if it's the sun or if it was just poor quality because the white roses are fine. Before I order more lillies I was wondering if there is a way to stop them fading?

I read about uv sealants etc but they seem to make the flowers go stiff and I don't want that. I also read something about hairspray can protect them? I just don't wanna leave it too last minute to order and assemble the flowers.

It is probably from the sun. I bought all of my flowers already off of a lady on Etsy (they are roses and calla lillies) and she said to keep them covered in the box they ship in or if I plan on putting them in vases while they are being stored to cover them with tissue paper so they don't fade. I have mine stored in the brown shipping box with a black sheet over the box.

Welcome to the WeddingWire community, Jo!

It’s hard to tell exactly what could have caused this, it is quite likely it was the sun.

As you have some time until your wedding, would you consider ordering some more lilies and test your theories? Keep some covered, spray some with hairspray, etc. and see whichever preserves them better? How long did it take for them to go yellow previously?

Thanks Cliodhna and Jessica! The previous ones I had for about 3 months when i noticed them go yellow and bobbly. I'm ordering some more from an Etsy shop that had very good reviews and some photos from other customers but I'll definitely store them out of direct sunlight and see if that helps. I just didn't wanna wait last minute as I haven't done flower arranging at all and feel like I have a lot of flowers to make! I had a fear of colors bleeding because I have red, white, black roses and white calla lillies but surprisingly they haven't ^^

Fingers crossed things go better with the new ones you buy from Etsy!

Are you just making your own bouquet, or do you have other floral arrangements to make also?

I'm making my own bouquet as well as the bridesmaid ones and the things for the groomsmen and ones for mothers etc. I wanted time to attempt it myself and if I couldn't then I still have time to get them made elsewhere. We are having long tables at the wedding, no seating arrangements as it's buffet and pretty casual so probably just have rose petals and some greenery spread down the middle of the table rather than fancy center pieces.

Hi Jo! How were the flowers you got from Etsy? Did you notice a difference with them?
