Pros & cons of large bridal party.

M&SC, on June 22, 2015 at 8:04 PM Posted in Planning 0 58

I am curious about reasons why a large bridal party could be bad? I have read & heard so many people saying that if they could do it over, they would have a smaller or no wedding party.

I have quite a few best-best friends & will also be including my sister & my 2 future SIL. All together it comes out to 9 gals. I haven't asked anyone to be in my bridal party YET. So I'm hoping to get some good answers before I do! & if there are more cons that make sense, how can I choose between all of my friends? (Just thought I would add that my friends live in Ca, my SIL lives in CO & I live in AZ. So events will be difficult, but who ever can make it, can make it. No hurt feelings from me!)

I personally have 7. We started with 8 but one girl dropped out for a bs reason. I guess people put a lot of cons on larger numbers because the more people you have the higher chance you'll have of people flaking, the more you have to pay for gifts, the harder it is to round people up, etc. Besides one girl dropping out I haven't had any issues. It probably helps that I speak to 5/7 daily though.

It's expensive! Every girl you have to buy flowers for as well as a thank you gift and an invite to the rehearsal dinner. FH wanted to ask everyone he's ever met and I made him keep it smaller.

I actually don't have any pros for a large bridal party. I have quite a few really close "best" friends, and instead chose to make it easier on everyone and just have my two sisters. Less stress, less drama.

It's expensive and it hard to coordinate that many schedules. It takes longer to get ready, people flake out on events. I'm having 4 and in already nervous. Lol

I had 4 BM's and a JBM and it was plenty for me. It is expensive like the others said, and more girls = more drama usually.

It can be costly.. I have 6 adults and 1 junior... But besides that you're bringing a bunch of girls together who might not have the same personalities, some girls might be super opinionated and weddings have a way of bringing out the best or worst in people... More people involved could mean more drama. But on the other side of it, you can get some amazing support from your girls if they are able to be adults.

I'm not really one for drama though it happens all the time on the forum regarding bp. I have six and wish I had the four I started with before FH insisted we have more. For me the big thing is cost. They are paying for their dresses but I am getting their hair and make up, flowers, and gifts. I want to thank them especially with something nice since they are standing up with me and are putting time and money into my wedding.

I have 2 and it's fantastic, my sister and someone who has known me my whole life (my second sister). When I was picking mine I was thinking back to a wedding I was in a few years ago. We were best friends at the time, I even lived at her house. Fast forward 4 years and we haven't spoken in a few years. I just think that now some random person she knew for a few years is in all of her wedding pictures. So for me it isn't so much about the size of the bridal party but more about who will still be around years later.

I don't have a bridal party and there have been absolutely no cons. Wouldn't have it any other way.

The idea of just my sister & 2 FSILs sounds nice.. But I'm also not very close with one of the FSILs. Getting ready with a group sounds like so much fun to me, but maybe I am naive? One of the weddings I was in a couple years back had 11 BMs. It was really fun. The bride gave us all a robe to get ready in. That was the only wedding I was ever in that we actually got gifts. I didn't even know that was a thing, so I was really surprised & grateful. I can imagine one of my friends (she is a lush & really flakey but ASKED if she could be my MOH.. What? Weird.) causing drama. But I feel kind of obligated to have her as a BM because we have been friends for 12 years that reconciled after her making a lot of selfish & dangerous decisions. So messy. Anyway!.. What to do :\

I don't see any pros. It's expensive. Just think you have to buy bouquets for each BM, some BM bouquets cost upwards to $100 each. Then you buy each of your BM gifts to give at rehearsal dinner. Some brides also pay for hair and makeup. But gifts and flowers are at least the norm. BM gifts can get pricey. ETA- Posted too soon. It's also a lot of women with many different personalities to corral.

I was one of 13 bridesmaids in a wedding. It wasn't bad, but 4 of us had to pile in my Corolla after thinking we would be going in a limo..... There was no makeup or hair requirements so that was good

Very smart getting advice on this one! I usually hear mostly drama surrounding a big parties. I'm just having my sister and FSIL whom are both easy going and I'm very close with them. I Also have very close bffs but they're all married/buying homes/having kiddos... I think it's best to keep I small and just let them come and have a good time. Best of luck, let us know how it goes!

For my first wedding I had 7. I didn't have any problems. It was actually a lot of fun. As far as cost, it was in my budget so again, it wasn't a big deal. ETA: I'm having 10 in my bridal party now, and I've confident it'll be a great experience.

Think about the personalities of the girls you are considering asking. Are they compatible? More people could mean more drama.

Ok let me ask this then: Would it be rude to only have my sister & 2 FSILs as my bridemaids but ask my other friends to get ready with us? I'm not picky at all with hair & make up so I imagine just getting ready all together in a hotel. But I just want to include them & not just see them for a little bit during the reception.

Coordinating all of them will be really hard... if all of you get ready together the morning of, you'll either need several hair/makeup people or you'll have to start really early. Planning bachelorette and shower parties will be madness.

By the way, 4 of my 5 BMs live in another city, and it means they weren't part of many things. As everyone will tell you, they don't *have* to do anything besides standing next to you, but I know at least two of them would have wanted to come with me to see wedding gowns and BM dresses, and a third one regretted not helping me with the DIY centrepieces because she enjoys doing crafts. So be aware of the fact that they won't be as involved as someone who lives near you.

I have no bridal party, mainly the reason being all of my friends are married and have their own kids, so they probably wouldn't have any time anyway, plus I've been a bridesmaid at least seven times and many of my close friends have been bridesmaids multiple times. It's just easier and you don't feel bad for making someone buy a dress they will never wear ever again. No cons.

Generally I realized I knew who was close to me and though I love them each. Not have 1 or 2 or 4 wouldn't have ruined my day and it would have made things easier.

    And been cheaper
