Pros and Cons to a december wedding

BlessedBenton, on September 17, 2018 at 9:27 PM Posted in Planning 0 30
Hey guys! I'm curious as to what some pros and cons are to a December wedding. I was originally wanting 11/24 as our wedding date (my bday is 11/22, FH is 11/26 sooo... it made perfect sense!)
Anyways, for like 59 reasons that date just isn't working anymore and FH really likes 12/8 (my lucky number is 12, his is 8) So it's still cute! Plus, this was our first kiss 12 years ago 😍

But I'm just kinda feeling ehhh about it because of the holidays being so close! SOOO... what are your thoughts? Opinion?

I'd send out save the dates really early so people can budget and arrange their schedules appropriately. I have family members who cant take off any time between Thanksgiving and xmas. so it might be hard for some people to go.

It’s a good date plus it does have some significance to you two. It’s only a couple weeks after the first day you liked so being near the holidays should be that much of a factor. But the good thing is that it’s after thanks giving but still a few weeks from Christmas so seems like it should work well. But yes i would send STD!

I wouldn’t want my wedding so close to the holidays. For me, December is always so packed, I probably wouldn’t even be able to attend a wedding (mine and FH’s birthdays are both that month though, so I’m probably a special case!) I just think holiday festivities take over the month of December so much, it could be tough. People are really really busy. Also you may live where it doesn’t snow, but are any of your guests flying from up north? Cause winter weather could still cause a problem.

Hi BlessedBenton! It's really up to you and your fiancé(e). Personally, I think a holiday wedding is really festive and fun, however I could also see the other argument too. Smiley heart Your reasoning for choosing your wedding date is super cute as well, so again it's totally up to you! Comparing your original reasonings & justifications for a December wedding to the alternatives.

I think an early December wedding is a great idea. Once you get into mid/late December it could get annoying because of the holidays. But 12/8 is far enough from thanksgiving and far enough from Christmas that everyone will probably be around and not too busy yet. Sounds lovely!

We picked 12/16 because it was one year to the day from when he proposed but he proposed then because he knew I wanted a December wedding. For me, the ambiance of December and all of the magic of the season made marrying the man of my dreams seem that much more romantic. I understand it won’t be practical for everyone but at the end of the day those people who truly want to be there will be. We gave our VIPs ten months of notice and I know it will be the perfect day for us.

We got married December 23rd and it was a magical weekend for us. We had 40 guests which helped to enhance the festive, cozy holiday spirit we wanted to capture with our wedding. Some cons to consider are that some people won't be able to come due to the holidays. It can also be expensive for people to travel. The weather may not be nice. It could be rainy, dark and gloomy. But the pros are that people are usually in a more festive spirit and wanting to party. Most places are already decorated beautifully for the holidays so you won't have to spend too much money on decor. Another pro which really worked in our favor was that it is not wedding season so you can usually get great off season deals from vendors.

We originally wanted a winter wedding but the weather here is so unpredictable and we didn't want to be stressing that there might be a blizzard or snowstorm and either have to postpone or people might not show up the day of. If you're somewhere where snow is a concern then I'd list that as a big con. Also, if there's travel involved you might get more declines. Most people will be traveling for Thanksgiving and Xmas and might not have the time and money to travel to, or even just attend, a wedding as well

So it depends where you live I guess? I really wanted a Feb. wedding but I live in MA and I've literally been buried by like 12 ft of snow over 3 days before here (I will forever curse out 2015...) so it posed too many risks with people traveling and the whole thing falling apart. I would be worried slightly less by that in December but if you are in a warm climate then that won't be a concern for you at all.

In terms of timing, I would send out STDs (even for a small wedding) at the year mark. This will give people time to have it on their calendar and adjust holiday plans and travel accordingly. (You can nab STDs for fairly cheap on Vistaprint during a 50% off sale - I think I got 100 for less than $40) You aren't going super close to either holiday that it would be too much of an inconvenience for anyone. And pros - you love the date (the biggest pro!), everything will be cheaper, and you likely won't have people in massive wedding fatigue from doing multiple weddings in a row.

It is definitely in the holiday season, but so is 11/24. I would say you would have about the same amount of people as if you had it 11/24. Keep in mind that pretty much anything 11/20 - Jan 1st is holiday season, so some people have family christmas parties that are always on certain days and some people will be in and out of town because they finally got a few days off work and want to take advantage of it. 12/8 definitely won't offend anyone but some just may not be able to attend due to holiday parties or plans so as long as you won't take offense to that then I think it would be fun! if I didn't already have a family Christmas, i would be excited to attend a holiday season wedding (that wasn't the weekend of Christmas or thanksgiving lol) ... I think it would be fun and easy to decorate because I'm sure your venue will already have a tree up and stuff, but once again, just remember that some people will not be able to attend so if you can't handle that then opt for something after Jan 1st! I actually have an important family Christmas on Dec 9th this year, and I declined a baby shower, so just for reference that many people have parties/plans all throughout that time frame! Many wedding venues give winter deals around winter time too.

Take the weather into consideration for where you are and where anyone may be traveling from. Check with your VIPs to make sure they should be able to get time off, since some people can't take off during that time of year. And go into it knowing that some people just won't be able to make it, regardless of how much you mean to them or how badly they want to be there.

The good thing is, a lot of venues aren't in high demand at that time of year, so you may get a discount. You could also potentially save some money on decorations if your venue has decorated any of their own.

Oh, and I would definitely send out STDs, even for that small of a guest list. We're so busy in December that we have a hard time fitting anything else in if we don't know about it until after school starts.

My FS had her interview for Vet school during that horrible 2015 storm. They got the roads clear enough in Grafton for them to have the potential students in the hospital (which had to stay open because animals in ICU) for the interviews the day after - all the students that couldnt reschedule for the next week/month at least. But on the Cape she was so snowed in that they had to walk through snow up to their waist to get to the main road to get a taxi all the way out because their development wasnt going to be plowed in time and her dad's car is a tiny little thing and he couldnt get it out. But Admin recognized her right away at accepted students day that spring!
