So my wedding is next October, the theme is rustic/country and I'm just trying to figure out what would be the best for my FH, myself and our guest. He joking said let's do cupcakes and the bride I am laughed it off. After looking at cake prices that I know I won't even eat and he might not neither....

I"m doing a 7 tier "cake". the top tier will be an 8" cake just so that FH and i can cut it but all other tiers will be filled with dozens upon dozens of cupcakes. I originally thought cupcakes would be much more expensive so of course i initially thought we would jst do a cake and then fh and i were at our cake tasting and FH said, why not do something different like cake pops or cupcakes and baker said "it would actually be cheaper to do one of those options"....lol that was the decision ahahahah... i purchased a beautiful square acrylic 7 tier stand on amazon and black and gold lace liners for cupcakes to sit in on stand. it will be beautiful.

ETA: i purchased extra forks and knives so that people can eat cupcake(s) with that instead of their hands.....I also have purchase cute black and gold cupcake boxes for guests to take one home in for a "midnight snack".

I think cupcakes can be done well. I would urge multiple flavors though.

I'd be happy with either as a guest.

Personally I don't like cupcakes at a wedding. I like the traditional wedding cake better, cupcakes are for birthday parties

I prefer cake. Cupcakes are messy. I'd rather not eat with my hands.

Also, so many posters are saying they're doing cupcakes to have multiple flavors... each of our tiers is a different flavor, so there will be plenty to choose from. A cake can be more than one flavor.

Reading this thread, i just got an idea that I am going to pitch to the FH but will share with you fine folks first.

So our original plan was a dummy cake then a sheet cake...we have been going back and forth with cupcakes vs cake. I like the cupcake idea because of so many options.

Whoopie pies are really big in New England and just had the idea of doing a whoopie pie display. Not cupcakes Like I said i just thought of it so the idea is a little rough. A lot of guests have dietary restrictions. (a lot of my family is dairy free, I am dairy and gluten free...YES i miss pizza) there is a good bakery that makes amazing dairy/gluten free whoopie pies too. So, I think it can be a win win.

Plus, we can have fun with a play on words like the classy couple we are Smiley smile

I don't like cupcakes at weddings. They are so hard to eat. So I would eat them like a piece of cake... So why not just have cake? It is personal preference, though.

    Pros:

Easy to serve--guests can just grab one whenever they feel like it.

    Different flavor choices

Maybe be cheaper than traditional cake

    Cons:

Guests may be disappointed that there's no "traditional" cake.

    The cupcake "trend" is over.

For the record, we are planning on doing cupcakes because there's a local cupcake place we love. I don't really care about whether they are "done to death" or "too cute". I have always loved cupcakes.

I am doing cupcakes, after tasting countless cakes that left a lot to be desired and that in itself was so disappointing, but I am not paying over $700.00 for aesthetically pleasing dry cake that tastes mostly of almonds (which was just my personal experience). I had about given up and decided to just do a desert table when my Fiance went and bought some cupcakes during my makeup and hair trial, and they were the best cupcakes I have ever had. I ended up with 10 flavors and over a hundred cupcakes for about $350.00, I think it is nice to have more of a variety but you also forgo a cake cutting, I love that we can go eat the cupcakes we chose for our wedding whenever the mood strikes us. Granted it also won't look as grand as wedding cake, but you don't have to pay a caterer to cut the cupcakes either. I think they both have their pros and cons and it ultimately comes to what each couples vision is for there day, for us budget was a factor also but depending on where you live it could be the same price.
