Pros and cons of cupcakes

Amanda, on March 5, 2017 at 4:37 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 30

So my wedding is next October, the theme is rustic/country and I'm just trying to figure out what would be the best for my FH, myself and our guest. He joking said let's do cupcakes and the bride I am laughed it off. After looking at cake prices that I know I won't even eat and he might not neither. What's everyone's thoughts about cupcakes? Has anyone done cupcakes? Pros and cons? You guys have been such a great help with advice for the newbie that I am!

My cousin had cupcakes at his wedding. I thought it was pretty cool. They had like 5 or 6 different flavors. The only problem was that they were HUGE. Like, probably the size of 2 normal cupcakes together. They had a ton left over at the end of the night. If they were smaller, I probably would have taken more to try all the different flavors.

Definitely research the prices of cupcakes compared to cake in your area. While it used to be true that cupcakes were cheaper, that doesn't seem to be the case anymore. It's actually more work for bakers to decorate 100 single cupcakes than it is for them to frost and decorate a cake that feeds 100 people, so that's oftentimes reflected in pricing.

ETA: If you're trying to save money and don't care about the cake as much, think about doing a simple two-tier cake with sheet cakes in the back. That's what i'm doing.

I've seen them at tons of weddings lately so as far as being weird or anything that's definitely not the case, plus you can have more flavors usually!!! Although for costs I'm not sure what would be better. You could try adding in different, cheaper desserts too though, we are doing cheesecake (not for cost, it's just our favorite) plus cookies and cupcakes. I've heard of pies at weddings too!!!

I've been to weddings with both cupcakes and regular cake. Had a good time at both. As long as the cake tastes good and you don't skimp on the bakery nobody will mind either/or. Go with what fits your theme and your budget in this instance. In fact, I felt more comfortable getting a second serving of cake when it was cupcakes, which is A+ in my mind.

I am planning to do a small simple cake to cut and then having cupcakes..mainly so that we can have a couple of different flavors and don't have to worry about cutting/serving cake.

Where are you? There's a place near me where cupcakes will cost half the price of a cake and they'll make a small cake for us to slice. I'm trying to talk FH into it. ETA: I think after learning about fees for cake cutting, he might be on board.

My venue paid for a 4 tier cake, but I paid an extra $150 for a 5th tier, and more lavish decor on the cake since I thought the other cakes covered by the venue were too plain for my taste (I'm adding broches, and ribbons). I'd say pick out ur venue 1st and find out if they will give you the cake, then take it from there... cupcakes at weddings are a no go for me!

I personally hate them too. The cuteness factor is way over.

Cupcakes can be more labor intensive since they all need to be individually decorated and placed so they're not always cheaper. I like the idea of cupcakes since a whole slice of cake can be too much for me but I know that some people prefer cake slices. Just be consistent and make sure you have enough for everyone either way.

I'm not sure about costs but I know as a guest I wouldn't mind! I would also enjoy multiple different flavors like another poster said. So if the cost works for you I say go for it Smiley smile

I'm doing a small 2 tier cake for pictures and then 150 cupcakes. I think it's great because you don't have to worry about cutting and serving cost plus you buy what you need so you don't stay with a lot let over. Cost efficient

I would love a cupcake at a wedding. I know it's a fad right now but I do see something more rustic about it, especially imagining a wooden display for them.

Even though it's a "fad" that's not why I'm having cupcakes. I like options. I like being able to have several flavors. I may also do dessert shooters like my cousin did at her wedding. I believe she had strawberry shortcake and cheesecake shooters so I'm going to look into that.

FH and I love having multiple flavors. You can have that with normal cake too but I like the look of cupcakes better. As far as price goes, it can be just as expensive if not more than normal cake (see above comments on labor intensiveness). We're getting ours for $2.25/cupcake but we're going simple in terms of decoration.

I love this idea and most people disagree on here! I love the idea of how easy it is to eat. But what I am doing is a dessert buffet, with mini cupcakes, bite size brownies and bars, and mini cheesecakes. There will be about 2-3 bite size desserts per person! and about 12 flavors of dessert total! It is costing about the same or less than a cake

Any form of high-quality cake is good, but honestly I am not much of a fan of cupcakes at weddings. It takes something away from the experience, IMO. Sort of reminds me of a kid's birthday party or office potluck more so than a wedding, plus you eat it with your hands so it feels less special.

Every time I've been to a wedding with cupcakes, guests take them as soon as they're set out. Whether or not your ready for "cake cutting". Just something to have your caterer keep in mind.

I like the cut cake and then sheet cake in the back as a cost saving thing.
