I am a physician who works in Boston and is getting married in March. I would love to honor my future husband by changing my name to his, but am struggling with the career implications of that at this stage in the game (networking, publishing, etc).

Does anyone know if I change my last name to Maiden HisName (non-hyphenated, two word last name) legally when I get married (and register that way through social security), is it possible to just go by Maiden Name at work and not have to change all of my documentation (medical license, registration, diploma, etc)?

Please help! Everyone seems to have a different story on this!

Your HR, Legal and medical boards would not have answers, because this is a PERSONAL PREFERENCE.

You can still use your maiden name professionally if you prefer. It is up you whether you change it or not. That being said, I bet you have some mentor doctors who are female who might have had this same challenge, whose opinion you could solicit to help you make the decision that is right for you.

That being said, for most professional licenses, most licensing organizations have a process for this. It can be as simple as submitting a copy of your marriage license or new social security card/drivers license/passport etc. It should not be that big of a headache.
