Private Ceremony, Bigger Reception: Attire??

Dalal, on February 5, 2020 at 9:59 AM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 8

My FI and I have been deliberating for months now and I think we've finally decided on what we want to do: we want to have a private ceremony in Italy with only our parents, siblings, and grandparents in attendance (13 people total including ourselves) and then have a casual reception for everyone else in Florida when we get back. We really like this idea, but we're unsure of what to wear, since the reception will be a few days or even a week after the ceremony takes place, not to mention that it'll be in a different country entirely. Do I wear my wedding dress to the reception? Or do I buy something else??

Any other advice from anyone who's done their ceremony/reception on different days is also welcome! We have no idea what we're doing lol.

I agree with PP, it’s really your preference. For me, it would depend on the formality of your reception and your dress. If you’re wearing a ball gown for the ceremony and your reception is in your backyard, sure, wear something more casual. But if the dress matches the event, I would wear it again.

The reception is going to be pretty casual, thinking of having it in our favorite brewery. I haven't bought a dress yet, but I don't want a ballgown! I want something more fitted, very minimal sparkle, but lots of lace. Do you think that's too much for the brewery?

My FSIL eloped to Colorado Springs last April, and then they had a reception at a park in September back in Missouri. She found a dress on an online boutique that she wore for both the ceremony in Colorado, and then for part of the time at the reception. For the second part of the reception, she changed into a lace romper. Her husband wore a suit jacket and jeans both days.

Since it's your day(s) you two can wear whatever you want! I think a lace fitted outfit at a brewery would definitely stand out, and would be a beautiful statement piece.

One of my co-workers did this. He had an elopement just him and his wife and then half a year later they planned a big reception. She didn't wear the same thing she wore to her elopement ceremony.
