Price of postage!!

Chelly, on April 24, 2011 at 8:08 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 11

Hey ladies,

I was just wondering if any of you have ever used the postage calulator on the usps website & had any feedback on its accuracy.

I tried using it to get an idea of the postage cost for my invites (I have pocketfolds w/ enclosures so I knew it would be higher than standard postage) The specs I put into the calculator were- standard sized envelops (size A9), guessed weight at 2.5 oz, and enterd the non-machinable option because the envelope contains a rigid object/is not easily bendable. This gave me a postage price of 90-something cents (dont remember exactly).

Well yesterday, my FH went down to the post office, with my "mock" invitation that I'm mailing to myself. It contained all the enclosure cards, ribbon & everything that will be sent in my official invitations. The cost to mail it was $1.75!!

I'm just confused as to why there was so much of a difference than what their website said. The official weight of the invite was 2 oz (cont.)

...which is less than what I had estimated when I entered everything. Of course he didn't ask what additional charges brought it up.

    Any suggestions?

The receipt shows it was sent first class mail. Thats just regular, right?

It's not just weight. Using ribbon in your invites is like some sort of magic spell that makes them much more expensive.

And even if you are using a standard size envelope, invitation paper is heavier than regular mailing paper. But did he get a reciept? That should tell you what the charges were.

I also had pocketfolds with enclosures without ribbons and mine were only $0.61.

Are the invites square or extra large in size? Also, you said they were pocket fold. Are they extra thick? That sometimes adds up the cost.

The ribbon was on the inside, kind of like a belly band, so I don't think there was any way for them to know it was there.

I didn't think it was exceptionally thick. The envelopes aren't square, and they fit into the guidelines listed online as "normal" envelope.

The receipt doesn't give a lot of information, it just says first class 2oz and the price.

Did he say "cheapest option possible?" I used to sell my college books on amazon and if I didn't tell them that, my price per ounce was higher and I said "sure" to their "upgrades." Eye roll. It turned out they just assumed I wanted it there in x amount of days, which was more expensive than the media mail option.

I'd say just take all the components of one of your invites to the post office and ask them to weight it for you and tell you how much it will cost. They were more than willing to do that for my mom, and then you'll know for sure from the horse's mouth and there are no surprises Smiley smile

My invites were square inculded the outer envelope and inner envelope, tri-fold invite , with rsvp card and envelope an it was over a ounce so it came to .61 cents. This was a week before stamps went up. I used the .61 cents cake stamps which were perfect. I would definitely double check at the post office for sure and let them know what it is so they can weigh it correctly. They are usually pretty helpful. That's what I did before I mailed my SDT's and invites and stamps did go up too, maybe that has something to do with it.

We got hit with some extra postage because we had a ribbon around the bottom of the invite. That created a bump that apparently meant they couldn't be run through the machines and had to be sorted by hand.

It may not be the weight, but more so, the size. If you have what they call an "oversized" envelope, then postage will hike up a bit. (Don't know the standard size to keep it less costly, but I would confirm with USPO.) Also, if you mail several, you should be able to get a "bulk" rate by sending them all together, they should give you some kind of discount. Ask to speak to a manager or supervisor at your local post office. You may opt to deliver some to closer friends and family to defray the costs as well, if you feel that is appropriate (which it is, of course).

    Good luck!

The best thing to do, is to go to your local post office and ask them to weigh one invitation for you. I did this, with my daughters invitations, and found that one stamp would do it, even though there was more than one card in the envelope.

Hmmm, have had a similar situation when mailing out a clients CD and Wedding book, I have not found their postage calculator to be very accurate.
