Price Guilt...

Kayla, on November 30, 2013 at 11:01 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 25

Ok so as some of you may know, I bought my dress yesterday (well actually my mother did). We went in with a budget of $1,500 and I went slightly over budget because I bought the veil too. So while I LOVE my dress and everything I can't help but to sit and think like "WOW I just paid this much money for a dress that I will wear ONE time ever for a few hours"

Have any of you ladies felt like that?

I'm pretty sure I will feel this way! That's why I'm not changing. I'm leaving on my wedding dress the whole night

It may be a dress you'll wear one time..but it's the dress you'll start your marriage in, the dress you'll show to your future children, and the dress that will always take you back to that special day. It's more than just a dress!

I think it's normal to feel a little guilty.

I'm feeling that way with the whole wedding. My parents are being very generous, but it's hard to believe they're spending for one day what my starting salary was out of college! I just hope they don't have buyers remorse...or maybe they're just happy to marry me off after 28 years lol.

It's the most important dress you will ever wear. The price tag is justified.

I agree with future mrs williams. i am pretty sure i'm going to feel like that and my budget is less than yours. it seems silly to me to have 2 dresses when you already spent so much on one... that you'll only wear for the ceremony!? unless you're wearing an insane ballgown, i just don't get it. but that's just me.

i'm gonna be rockin' my special gown all. night. long.

Yes, I got that feeling afterwards. My budget was $2000 for my dress and accessories and I spent $1700 ($1000 on my dress and $700 on accessories which was my veil, head piece, sash, bra, and slip). I definitely had price guilt afterwards thinking about how I just paid $700 for dress accesories that I know on a normal day I would not spend that kind of money on accessories. But I figured its one less thing I have to worry about. Still gotta get my shoes tho... Lol

I am having a hard time spending a lot of money on anything wedding related, but I just keep thinking that this is something I want to have memories of forever. I hardly ever treat myself to things, so I think this time it's ok to =)

Me. My budget was 3K and my dress is around 2,500 but when you add alterations, veil, the entire ensemble everything sky rockets. It is one day, but its my very most special day so it is worth it to me, but it does give me pause.

Thanks for all of your kind words. It really made me feel better. I don't get the two dress thing either. I couldn't imagine taking this dress off after wearing it for only 15-30 minutes! I'm rocking that dress all night like Jenna says!

SunshineJenn- It is the most important drses I will ever wear you are right. That made me feel better.

K'lyssa- you are so right. You bring up great points. That made me feel so much better Smiley winking

I did this with the Maggie dress i wanted because my mom was paying for it and was having a hard time paying so gave it up. Now i am doing smaller budget under $1000.

Remember you can always sell it after the wedding (if you want to that is..), so if you paid say $1600 for it, and then sell it for $800 then in the end it's only cost you $800. Even if you sell it for less than half price, you'll still recover at least some of the original price. Just take lots of good photos so you won't feel bad about selling it later!

My gown is $265 before alterations and accessories and although its not the expensive thing I'll own I am a little terrified about the overall cost. Fyi tiny budget is an understatement!

I knew I would feel guilty, so I chose a dress that was only a little more than one car payment. I know people say that it's a special day, it's a once-in-a-lifetime dress (although second and third brides on this forum probably laugh whenever it's said), but I just can't use the that justification - I'd rather spend money on a special week/month/house, etc. To me, that way of thinking is what leads people into debt. I'm pretty frugal and smart about my money. I have the money for a multi-thousand dollar dress, but I just can't do it.

That said, I'm paying for my own. If someone offered me $1,000-$2,000 for a dress, I would probably spend whatever they gave me. If your mother bought it for you, it's a gift and it's what SHE wants to spend her money on.

Erica put it well. If it wasn't coming from my pocket I would not feel bad spending it. If your mom really didn't want to spend that much she would have said so right?

I will feel guilty spending $500 lol
