Premium bar package or more guest?

BeccaRenee, on February 13, 2018 at 10:40 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 33
FH and I previously decided to host an open bar for our reception and together we picked the third package. He recently changed his mind and said that he wants to picked a cheaper package. He wants to add an extra 20 people to the guest list. I want to compromise but I also want our guest to enjoy themselves. I’m not much of a drinker so I could really use some help. As a guest what package would you be satisfied with? Can you taste the difference in brands? I don’t want to be given the side eye at our wedding because someone can’t have a Jack w/ Coke.

I wouldn’t go any cheaper on the package.

the more people you add the more tables, centerpieces, food, drinks, chairs, favors, cake, utensils, plates, napkins you need.

How many guests are you having? I would stick with 3 myself since the upgrade cost is so low. Two would be sufficient but 3 is definitely a nice selection for a wedding.

That’s just my suggestion though, if it were my wedding what I would do! Smiley smile

Honestly, I'd be fine with just beer and wine, I'd go with one of the cheaper bar plans.

When it came to the drinks at our wedding we have decided to keep it simple. We are having 2 draft beers wine red and blush rum and vodka along with a signature drink. Then we will also have pop and coffee.

The $3-$4 price difference will really get you 20 more guests? After all the other items (paper, florals, chairs etc) are accounted for? Doesn’t sound like these people are VIPs if they are now just being added to the list. I would keep #3, much more recognizable brands.

We’re currently at 130 which I think is the perfect size. The people that my FH wants to add are distant relatives.

We came in under budget by a few thousand which came as a huge surprise. FH feels like we should max out the venue’s capacity and invite the 20 people that we cut from our guest list originally. So FH wants to use all the money that we saved and get a cheaper bar package.

We went to a couple weddings where the couples hosted using extremely off-brand liquor/wine. It did affect my drink choice but it did not affect my opinion of them at all. I was properly hosted with plenty of food and an open bar. I wasn't about to get snarky about the type of bar. My husband wanted to upgrade ours to premium but we were both happy with the options in the mid range bar. So we left it and that was pretty similar to your level 3. Don't forget though those extra 20 people will cost you more than in just food/drink costs.

3 but I love amaretto and kaluha. I'd never go with 1.

Not 1. Two would be okay, three would be better. Four is unnecessary.

I don't drink hard liquor much and I usually save it for special occasions such as parties, weddings and vacations. I think many people do this as well and expect a nicer bar at weddings and I would expect the same. I personally cant tell the difference between most vodkas and dont think your guests will be offended by setting up your open bar with lower level liquors.

I would prefer three as a guest, but I think most people wouldn't know the difference, if you really think it will make a difference in the guest list. But I'm skeptical that you'll be able to fit in that many more people just by changing the package.

Either way, I think it's fine Smiley smile

I honestly don't care or notice brands of alcohol there are at weddings, just as long as there's some to be had. I'm not a huge hard alcohol drinker, though.

However, like others have said, adding to a guest list adds up more than you'd expect. You have to account for the extras in every area of the event. For instance, when my FH was calculating adding more people than we'd originally booked for, he was only taking into consideration the venue's PP cost but not the bar package and additional packages we'd added at booking.

Choosing option 2 would still be considered hosting properly. 3 is an added bonus but it is not necessary.

If I were you I’d go with Option 2.

    1. The price is right.
    2. If any of your guests think you’re cheap because you went with a simpler bar package then they’re being pretty crappy people. You’re putting on a wedding so you should be able to do whatever you’d like.
    3. If your fiancé really wants extra guests at your wedding then concessions must be made regarding details in order to afford that.

I'd go with 4 cause I love malibu, and lots of times it's not available haha. I'd stick with your current guest list. Adding guests will add up in more than just the PP cost at the venue. We are aiming for a smaller event anyway, so I like smaller guest lists, and a more premium experience

Thanks. I’m definitely looking for a smaller guest list with a few added premium perks.
