Did you and your spouse attend pre-marital counseling? -If so, what was your experience? Did you find it beneficial to your relationship? -If not, why did you chose not to? Did you and your spouse find an alternative?

That sounds perfect! You two should find it very helpful.

We did both couples' counseling last year (highly helpful and something we still refer back to), and precana (high unhelpful, possibly actively hurtful for us).

I personally recommend secular therapy, as that requires licensing and training.

I've actually been meaning to look into this! Does anyone have any advice where to look? And, how much this can cost? We're not particularly religious so wouldn't want to go through a church. I'd also like us to be able to synch on finances in a big way. With everything else to research and organize (and pay for), it's hard adding another thing to the list!

The pastor that is marrying us requires it. I was soooo happy that was requirement. The first session was rough. I wanted to call off the engagement actually. Now, we are at the 4th session and I love it. Something we really needed and will definitely help
during this life journey together. Especially the conflict resolution. I’d suggest it to any couple getting married.

I'm not sure what you mean?

Couples' counseling is for couples, regardless of marital status.

Precana is a specifically Catholic pre-wedding thing.

Honestly my husband planned, booked, and paid for our premarital counseling so I never did the research. I will say that the options and pricing from State to State varies. A Google search should help you find someone in your area. I highly recommend premarital counseling!

It is VERY smart to do some premarital counseling. The first year is always the hardest, for whatever reason. It's pretty important to know each other's love languages, how you each feel about the 3 biggest causes of divorce, and each other's fighting styles. Worth every penny!!

I could understand why people do this if there are already deep seated issues in the relationship, however my fiance and I get along pretty well and don't really have any need for premarital counseling. I'm the type of person to look into something like that once the problem has already arose, if at all. Why try to fix something that isn't broken?

I understand your perspective. In my case my husband and I weren't having any issues. We just wanted to make sure we considered and discussed all aspects of a relationships to prevent issues from occuring in the future. Congrats on your future wedding!
