Premarital Counseling

The Bride, on June 3, 2019 at 10:13 PM Posted in Family and Relationships 1 35

Did you and your spouse attend pre-marital counseling?

-If so, what was your experience? Did you find it beneficial to your relationship?

-If not, why did you chose not to? Did you and your spouse find an alternative?

I want to but there is no Spanish speaking counselor where I live and if there is, they are not taking new clients. Bummer really, sometimes it's important to talk some things out with someone that sees an entire new perspective

Yeah, I'm really sorry to hear that. I hope you can find someone even if you have to travel a little. My husband and I were fortunate enough to have a Black male for our first 5 sessions and a Hispanic female for our last 5 sessions so we had the male and female perspective.

We are doing premarital counseling. We got our book this past weekend. It will be like 5 2 hour sessions. We are excited because we just took the compatibility quiz and were strong in everything.

I totally agree with this! We may not have any issues now but it will prepare us for things that may come and how to handle them.

Premarital counseling definitely brought up some topics we hadn't considered and even allowed us to go deeper into those we previously discussed.

We are not because we are not religious at all, and are not having a religious officiant or ceremony. Its just not something that feels important to us. I also feel really weird talking to a virtual stranger about our relationship. We've been together almost 7 years and living together more than 4. We dont really have any problems that need aired out, we've always been good at working things out on our own.

I would of LOVED to. But I feel like it’s too late? 3 months out.. not sure. His grandmother gave us a before marriage “work book” bible for us to work on together. It is so sweet to be able to lay in bed together and work on it for an hour or two hours at a time. We love it. It brings us closer together and it’s actually something we look forward to every night.

We have to attend 3 premarital counseling sessions with the pastor of the church. We've had one so far. The first session we went over personality types and potential conflicts and looked over family tree stuff. The next meeting will be more about conflict resolution and making sure we're on the same page in terms of important life stuff (kids, finances, etc.). The third meeting is mostly just going over the details of the ceremony itself.

The pastor just got married himself last year so it's nice talking to someone who's been going through all this first hand recently.

Marriage counseling does not mean that you have problems in your relationship, at all. And it also doesn’t have to be religious there are marriage counseling classes that offer non religious counseling. It’s more fun than anything. It helps you learn more about each other when you’ve thought you’ve known everything. You do fun quizzes and games. (I wish we did this but I have heard this from my FMIL). 😄

I don't think its too late. Pre-martial counseling is usually about 5-12 sessions and they can be done in a month or so based on your availability. During our counseling, we were also advised to start reading and discussing the bible together which really brought us closer on a spiritual level. If you don't get to attend counseling that book will be just as good.

I think what you'll discuss is simply, to the point, and will help you two tremendously.

Thank you I appreciate your feed back! We go to church together and the center of our relationship is the Lord, always. It is to refreshing to be with someone who puts God first, too! (Plus it makes you feel good about who you will raise your future kids with, too!)

So first off, I love that we have the same name. And second, I am looking forward to our premarital counseling. I live in a really small country where everyone knows everyone, so I was a bit apprehensive about which pastor to do it with, but I was happy to find one that seemed pretty okay.

FH and I plan to do our counseling with a minister from our church! It's strongly encouraged there and should be beneficial to us. I'm looking forward to it!
