Pregnant Bridesmaid...

Britti, on October 22, 2015 at 6:01 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 30

Hello all!

So one of my bridesmaids, who is also my sister, texted me earlier and let me know that her and her husband are planning on trying to get pregnant. My wedding is in 7 months and she is going to be a bridesmaid. Here's my question- when should she order her dress?

If she gets pregnant soon, she could be 7 months pregnant at the time of the wedding! She's super tiny and the last time she was pregnant, she had that perfect pregnant belly. So she could drastically change size in the next few months. I was wondering if anyone has any advice on this? I'm also planning on asking the lady who is making the dresses for her opinion.

P.S. I am so excited that I might become an aunt again!!! And I am the only one in the family who knows that they are trying, so I can't talk to anyone else about it. I really hope she gets pregnant!!

I'd order within the regular timeline the shop tells you. For example 6 months before may be the policy, and everything shorter is a rush fee. And just order it bigger. Its much easier to alter it to make it smaller than make it bigger. And put some cash to the side for alterations (you in case she can't afford it or you're just being nice, or her)

I don't know, if it were me I'd probably re-evaluate. My BM's are all getting their dresses from Azazie, Their turnaround is 4 weeks so I'm having them order the dresses no later than 8 weeks before.

If you love the dresses you picked, is it possible to have hers made long? That way it can just be hemmed to fit over her belly.

I was a pregnant bridesmaid last summer and our dresses were completely custom made. And may I add, this seamstress lives in the city where the wedding was held which is 3 hrs away. So I went to get fitted about 4 months before the wedding. Then about 2 month later I went down for a follow up fitting. She had left a lot of space for me to grow, but I was a very tiny preggo so nothing really changed except my belly, so she took more in but still left some space. Then she told me to just wait until the last week before the wedding and she would finish the final alterations on the same day, which she did. It worked out great in the end.

How long did it take her previously to get pregnant? If shes a fertile mertile and you actually think she'll get pregnant the first go around then I'd order a larder size. Then again it may take her 6 months to conceive and then that would be all for nothing.

Are you having a seamstress make these dresses? If so, that may allow for a much more flexible timeline. I think you should ask the lady when the the latest she can start is and also to maybe do your sister's dress last.

I have a bridesmaid who will be 9 months when we go down the aisle! She went up a size from the dress she tried on. My suggestion is that if your BM is pregnant (or rather wanting to become) it may not hurt to go up a size

EDIT: just noticed you said they were going to be made. That leaves a lot more flexibility Smiley smile

My bridesmaid just ordered her Alfred Angelo dress (they said to do it 4 months ahead) and will be 6 weeks away from her due date at my wedding. Instead of ordering with the other girls from Weddington Way, she went to her local Alfred Angelo store and they helped her determine a size and will do all alterations she needs to get it to fit right.

One of my bridesmaid got pregnant too. She was due a week before the the wedding. So, she decided to step down just incase something was to happen and she delivered right around the time of the wedding, or went into labor at the wedding, etc. so many things could happen. But we are getting the dresses at Davids Bridal and they were suggested we come in right before the cut off order date and she can see what size she is then and then order a couple sizes bigger since they can take in dressed up to 3 sizes without changing the structure of the dress. My cut off was 12 weeks.

My SIL was 6.5 months at our wedding and she ordered her dress in January in order to make sure it was in. She then took it back to make sure it fit, and ended up exchanging for a larger size. I would space it out but you should be fine if they are made!

Thank you ladies for your expertise! We are getting them made, so I'm waiting to hear back from the woman making them. My main concern is that the woman wants to make all the dresses at the same time, so if we wait to order one dress then all the girls will have to wait for their dress. Which I don't think they'll mind, it will just be a little less time for them to find accessories and what not.

My MOH was 7.5 months pregnant when I got married. She had an idea of what size she was the first pregnancy so she kind of went with a size close to what size she was around then the first time. She ordered her dress at the same time as the other girls but got a few sizes bigger and just got it altered a week before the wedding. The dress looked perfect! And extra adorable with a baby bump. Yay for pregnant bridesmaids! I love the look of long flowy dresses on pregnant ladies!

KGroenwold- I completely agree with you! My girls are going to be wearing long dresses and I think it will be extra adorable to see my sister with a baby bump in it. I think I was more excited to share the news of my sister potentially getting pregnant than I was to ask the question. Especially since my other sister is planning on adopting and I may have ANOTHER niece before the wedding!!!

Brittany, totally unrelated to what you wanted to know, I just wanted to say-- "I am SO GLAD you are nothing but thrilled for your sister and that your post is just about how to work around her pregnancy!" I have seen way too many, "How could she? This will totally ruin things..." posts around bridesmaids who become pregnant. Good for you. I'm sure you're a great aunt and sister!

^ @Zoe- I know right! I was genuinely excited for SIL and her pregnancy. She is 37 and it needed to happen soon cause she was getting super antsy! It made no difference to our wedding logistic wise that she was pregnant, it was just sweeter IMHO cause we had 2 exciting life events in the family in 1 year after a super sad one (grandma passed).

Never understood how people could be so negative about it!!

I will say though, my MIL was a crazypants the week of the wedding and only focused on my pregnant sister in law and her schedule and not on what we had to get done. My SIL was so annoyed because she's like "Hello I am pregnant, not an invalid. I can walk around the store to do errands. This isnt the day we are going into labor- leave me alone". hah

My sister is pregnant right now and we went to alfred angelo for the bridesmaid dresses. She will be almost 9 months pregnant at my wedding and they did some calculation to determine how much larger of a dress she should order. then they do alterations on it a week before the wedding. this is not a maternity dress though. i do know they have maternity bridesmaid dresses out there but the ones we found were not good looking. we chose one with a high empire waist that they said would work well with her belly!

You guys are so sweet! I've been waiting so long for one of my sisters to have another child. I'm so excited that two of them are :-)

And I really like the idea of ordering a few sizes up and getting alterations done the week before!

One of my BMs found out she was pregnant after she bought her dress. Luckily, DB was able to allow her to exchange her dress for a bigger size. They even had a fake tummy for her to put on under the dress to see how it looked.

My sister was 9 months pregnant at my wedding. Wedding was end of September. We ordered her dress in July. Well, we originally ordered her dress in January in a size 2 and then she found out she was pregnant lol. No returns or refunds. So yes, we ordered it 2 months prior and gave her some wiggle room for growth. She ended up needing it taken in. A lot.

I was going to post something about this, because I'm in a wedding in July and I just pulled b/c, so it could be any time now.

I may have to re-buy the dress for the wedding I'm in in March, and just waiting as long as I can to buy the dress for the July wedding.

It's hard b/c there's no right answer until you know if she's pregnant and when!
