We recently had our first pre-marital counseling session. We will be getting married in my home church, a nondenominational church, in my home town approximately 6 hours from where we currently live. Because of the distance we are doing this over Skype. It is a larger church so they have a Pastor of Marriage and Family Relations in charge of pre-marital counseling and once couples complete the counseling, he then gives the green light to the head pastor (a really cool guy and friend of my parents) to go ahead and marry them.

Our first session was HORRIBLE! He started asking a little bit about each of us, how we met, when we knew we wanted to get married, and why we wanted to get married in the church. Our response to the latter was that we wanted our wedding to be a reflection of our values and beliefs and our faith is a very important part of who we are both individually and as a couple, and we want a Christian ceremony that would reflect that.

I'm so sorry this pastor flipped on you like that. Ick. I have a lot of issues with Christianity, and most of them stem from people being more committed to a church itself, a group, or specific way of thinking instead of the mission of God's love overall. I don't really like ascribing myself to any "group" or way of thinking any more.

I am hoping that this pastor just has a bad attitude, but I'd be a little on edge about using their church as well. If they trust him to run these kinds of sessions and be a pastor, I'd worry that they have other problems going on there around judging others or being overly critical. I wouldn't want them to try to influence other decisions about your wedding down the road.

I am currently going through pre marital counseling through our church and it is nothing like this!! i am so sorry to hear that! our pastor is very calm, un judging, there is no right answer and not pushy at all. He does emphasize the importance of having a relationship with God but he doesnt shove it down your throat either. I dont think it is anyones decision but your's and your FH whether you are ready to get married or not.

This is ridiculous. I would go to the head pastor as well and ask for something similar to a second opinion. If he's friend's with your dad, I'm sure he'll be more than willing to talk to you. Our pre-marital counseling was with our head pastor and he never once judged us for anything. DH isn't even fully sure what he believes and our pastor just said it's important to have God in the center of our marriage and moved on. I just can't believe how judgmental he's being.

Wrong....what he is saying and doing is just wrong. He is the kinda person that gives Christians a bad name!

I hope you fine someone else. I am so sorry you had to hear that.

Thank you for your feedback everyone! I had a chance to speak to the head pastor and apparently other couples and families had similar complaints about feeling judged and they are trying to find someone to replace the position. The head pastor apologized and said he will be taking over our pre-marital counseling, so fingers crossed that things go better from here on out!
