Prayer Alternative

Megan, on October 16, 2014 at 12:55 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 4

So my fiance and I aren't religious and we don't want to have a prayer before dinner at our reception though we do have family members that pray. Does anyone have an idea for alternatives that we could do before the meal that would be respectful to our guests but still match who we are? We're also doing speeches before dinner but just curious what other people have done.

I don't think you necessarily need to do anything other than the toasts. That's all we did at ours. If you want to say something though check out these: http://secularseasons.org/celebrations/graces.html

    I like this one:

"For the meal we are about to eat,

For those that made it possible,

and for those with whom we are about to share it,

    we are thankful."

Agreed. My groom and I did thank you toasts before the meal and that was enough.

Depending on how religious your relatives are, it might better to skip prayer/blessing at all. You could do a generic blessing like Kimberly said, but depending on the beliefs of your guests they may find that more offensive than just skipping it altogether.

Don't do anything. If people want to say a prayer before they eat, they can do it quietly to themselves. I don't think I've ever been to a wedding with a prayer before dinner, even FOR religious couples.
