Postponing - Advice

Caroline, on April 4, 2020 at 8:30 AM Posted in Community Conversations 1 4
My fiancé and I have decided to postpone our wedding and are still deciding on a new date (originally June 7). We are going to get married just the two of us at the courthouse on our original date for personal/religious reasons since we are moving in together in June, but will still have our big wedding ceremony as it was planned at a later, safer date with our families. I want the ceremony at a later date to feel like the “real” wedding.

Thoughts on wedding rings for the May wedding in front of a judge - do we go ahead and exchange permanent wedding rings (we haven’t bought them yet and I’m worried about getting them in time) or do we save those for the big day later on? If we don’t exchange them in May, what should we do instead?
Thanks Smiley smile

If you can get them ordered and get them in time, I would exchange them in front of the judge and wear them, and then maybe do some sort of ring warming/blessing/whatever during your larger ceremony. If you don't get them in time, then I would wear them when you get them and "exchange" them in front of everyone at the larger ceremony - but that's just me.

You have to do what you feel comfortable with.

We exchanged rings. But we have also had them for a while.

We are doing the exact same thing. I’m planning on exchanging rings in the courthouse but also doing it at our actual wedding. But that’s just me! If you can get them in time for your courthouse ceremony, you could do both.

    Hi Caroline,

This is definitely a crazy stressful and uncertain time for everyone! I love the idea of doing a small ceremony on your pre-planned date, with a larger reception in a few months!

If you are unable to purchase rings before the big day, you might consider exchanging smalls gifts that mean something. Maybe you can exchange something to wear day of your reception! I think that will be so unique.
