We expect his brother, sister, and several aunts and uncles to come, so it definitely won’t be one-sided. We’re also both very lucky to have a great relationship with the neighbors he grew up next to, who have become an extended family/adoptive parents. My FH has always been very reserved about his parents, his mother died when he was about 13 and his dad died about five months after FH and I met (he was 28). One of my friends commented that I’m lucky I don’t have to deal with the drama of in-laws. She meant it as a joke and not to be mean, but I’m glad FH didn’t hear it- I can only imagine. He won’t even talk about it, maybe because he feels like it’s still so far away, but I hope we can find a way to honor their memory at the ceremony, along with my grandfather who has also passed.

Awww I'm so sorry! Very similar situation for my fiance - his dad passed when he was in his early 20s, then his mom died after battling cancer exactly a year after we met. Sadly, he doesn't have much family other than two brothers and his sister. He does at least have an adult niece and nephew who he's close with, and they have kids of their own. It's one of the reasons I'd like to make our wedding child-friendly so he can have as many family members there as possible. I have both parents and several aunts and uncles on each side, along with cousins.

I can't believe your friend! I get how someone could mean it as a joke and my friends definitely like dark humor, but still! Whenever I see brides on here posting about FMIL drama I'm honestly so jealous. I'd give anything to have her here with us.
