postage stamps for invites

HisMrs, on July 9, 2012 at 10:50 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 19

Silly question here... how important is it to have "wedding" postage stamps on your invitations? Do people really care about that sorta thing? I have a decent stash of "regular" stamps, if I used those I would probably only need to buy about 20 more stamps. Is it tacky to use those? I know the invitation sets the whole "mood" for the wedding. If you received an invite with a regular stamp would you think, hmmm... there's one detail she over looked! Or would you even care/notice?

No one will even notice! My only caution would be to take them to the post office to have the invites weighed... regular stamps are not usually enough to cover the postage on wedding invites (extra weight, weird shapes, etc). I would hate for you to stamp and send, only to have them come back to you all marked up for NSF postage.

Most people won't notice. If you know of people who would, then make the 20 other stamps wedding ones and use those on them. But if you are worried about it, buy them and use them, then use the other ones you have stashed for everyday things and thank you notes (you will be writing quite a few)

Not a big deal, but they're prettier~ but I got the forever wedding stamps with the white roses. They don't cost any more than the flags. I used them for the invite, rsvp, and I'll put them on the thank you cards. After that, random bills will have them until they're gone.

Second the suggestion to go have them weighed before you buy any stamps! And if that post office tells you they're over, get a second opinion at another post office. We were overcharged at one office.

I like decorative stamps but I don't think they have to be wedding related. We used the regular bonsai stamps on our RSVP envelopes and I think they're just as beautiful as the wedding stamps.

I think it would depend on what the pic is that's on the stamps you already have....they do have some pretty random pics that might look weird for a wedding invite. It may sound picky, but I really liked having pretty stamps on my pretty invitations. Can you try one out to see if you hate it?

I agree with everybody else. It's really not necessary. If it isn't in your budget then I would say don't worry about it. However if you can afford it Go for it. I did. I had personalized wedding stamps. I went WAY overboard cuz I just couldn't help it. Smiley smile

    Here's a pic of it.

I was wondering about this myself. Since we are having a small wedding, I might splurge on this just to be cute. I really like your stamp, Michele.

I went to the Post Office to weigh our invites, the cost of the postage was $0.65/each envelope. The 65 cent stamps had a few different designs I got to choose from- butterflies or a cake, I chose the cake ones b/c the picture looks like a wedding cake. The regular forever stamps (w/a pic of the liberty bell) only cost $.044/each and wouldn't cover the postage necessary for the invites. I didn't "care" if the stamps were wedding themed or not, but it didn't cost me any extra to choose the wedding themed ones that I had to buy anyway. Better weight them before putting a regular stamp on them and sending them out- only to have them sent back to you w/"insufficient funds" stampped on 'em, then having to buy new envelopes, new lables, and more stamps that are the correct postage. Cover the bases, but honestly- no one would ever notice the design of the stamps you get, just don't try to skip a step by not weighing them- that can end up costing you way more.

Thanks Uhura. Smiley smile I made them myself. And the good thing is that you can choose how much postage the stamp is while you are making it.

I am debating personalized stamps, and our invites are teetering between $0.65 and $0.85 b/c of the ribbon on them. This is the hold up for me, that and on zazzle they are an extra $100 to have the personalized stamps and I'm not sure that's worth it for me...that's hair and make up for a BP attendant haha

    Thanks for your input girls!

Kris, that same thing happened to a friend of mine. She got two different rates from 2 different post offices! Her invites were the right weight for a 45 cent stamp but the 1st PO wanted to charge extra because the ribbon on the invite made it so the envelope wasn't "flat enough".

I just so happen to have a postage meter right here at work, so I can weigh those babies myself and not get jerked around! Smiley smile

I don't think anyone will care or notice even! We did wedding cake usps stamps because we needed a higher dollar amount stamp(¢65) because our invitations weren't light enough for the ¢45 stamps.

Also, don't forget that the rsvp card needs to be stamped and included in the invitation.

@Amy, I weighed mine in my office with the postage machine and they weighed in at 2 oz ($0.65) but the post office I went to with my sample said $0.85 b/c of the ribbon making it an "odd shape" according to USPS. If don't have have ribbon, I say go for it! Either way, I'm taking it to find a post office where they tell me its $0.65 haha

I recently received a wedding invitation with Marvel superhero stamps...it was a nice reflection of the personality of the couple. I'm sure it was mostly the groom's doing but it's refreshing to see some of the grooms input, especially on the invite.

I would only notice the stamp, if it was really cute, otherwise it wouldn't matter.

For the postage issue - the rate is determined by whether or not the piece can be run through the machines. So, square cards, shaped card, and cards with ribbons on them tend to be non-machinable and they usually cost 20 cents more to mail. Also the total weight adds to the cost, so if there are a lot of inserts or heavy weight cardstock or thick embellishments those cards are going to cost even more.
