Postage for Invitations

Heather, on June 3, 2010 at 2:33 PM Posted in Planning 0 14

So, lets just start with the obvious...I DEFINITELY should have sent my invitations by now and haven't! Our plan was to have me go get stamps during my lunch break and we are going to stamp&seal away tonight and sent them out in the morning. No big deal right? Well, when I weighed the invitations it told me that I would need the .61 stamp (which is fine) so I go to the post office today and they tell me that since there is ONE LITTLE piece of ribbon on them, I have to use .81 cent stamps! I was a little frustrated because I didn't feel like it mattered that much, but I was ok with it. At this point I just need to get them out. My problem however is that there is no .81 cent stamp...and there is no .20 cent stamp...so I would have to put THREE stamps on my invitations! YUCK! It would look soooo bad, so my question is..do you think I could get away with just mailing them all with the original .61 cent stamp? If not I'm finding the ribbon a new home! Lol I will take off ALL the ribbon!!

Also I guess I should add, the reason for the .20 cents more is NOT because it changed the weight of the invitation but only because there is a small bulge in the envelope. Are you freaking kidding me??

Go right to your post office. I only had 1 stamp on my envelope but I had to pay them the rest. This how much I had to pay.

$1.01 per invite to mail :o so crazy!!!!

    .44 stamp

    .20 square shape fee

    .37 overweight fee

    PLUS

    .44 for RSVP envelope

    = $1.45

Is the ribbon on the outside of the envelope? If so the extra postage is because they wont go through the machines that way. Id put the ribbon on the inside somehow or loose it. Or put them in another envelope.

Wow, I've never heard of that. I thought it was the weight that mattered! Give me a break! Can they just not use stamps at all, but weigh them and stamp them with the ink? I don't know what that's called, but maybe that only works with packages. :0 Sorry I can't be of more help!

What's the next highest up from .61 cent stamp? Maybe you'll just have to pay a little more than .81 just to have one stamp. ? Still sucks, though.

No dont mail them anyway with .61, they wont go through and will take forever to get back to you!

Oh the bulge is why. You might be able to get away with just the 61 cents but then you run the risk of them coming back with postage due or your guests getting postage due notices.

Mine was weighed then stamped with ink. I already had 1 wedding ring stamp on my invites. I didnt realize they were overweight and the shape wouldnt go through the machine.

That's a good idea Future Mrs.Jacques! I just don't want to deal with it anymore. I'm sooo tempted just to remove all the ribbon and send them out!

Mine where $1.06 a piece because of the size, ribbon, and layers. I stood at the counter forever while they made a sticker for each one. We have had great feedback on them , so it was worth the extra money.

If you are still hoping to have ribbon on your invitations, is switching the ribbon to a thinner, less bulky one an option? A silk or organdy ribbon that is 1/4" wide would not require extra postage if you tie a square (reef) knot as it likes flat and the ribbon is quite thin.

If you don't know how to tie a square knot, do a good search and I'm sure you will find the instructions. Good luck!

My invitations would have been fine weight wise with one stamp, but because I had buttons on them they wouldn't go through the machines without ripping the envelopes. So we sucked it up and put two stamps and had them mailed non-machinable.

I'm sorry! That sucks! I got lucky with my diy invites and got away with the good ole regular 47 ish cent stamp. Whatever normal price is Smiley smile BUT I would get rid of the ribbon..if it doesn't lessen the beauty of your invites of course. Good luck!

You can order custom stamps for .81 from www.stamps.com You do have to sign up for their membership, but the first month is free. SO after you order the stamps, cancel your account so you won't get the $15.99 charge.
