My invitations consist of one 5x7 card that has the ceremony/reception details, and an RSVP card and return envelope, bundled together with a thin piece of hemp string. I weighed my invitations on our postage machine at work and found that the postage was $.46. Yay! I dropped approximately 60 invites in the post office drop box on Monday. The majority of the invites were for in town guests, who have told me they've already received them! Another yay! I go to the post office today to get more stamps to mail my remaining invites. 3 of the invites I had left to mail had an extra card for directions for some older out of town guests. I asked the clerk to just double check and make sure that the postage was still $.46. She picked up my invite, squeezed where the hemp string was, and said, you need another $.21 in postage because of this. I explained to her that I had already mailed out 60 invites and they had delivered and she got really snotty with me and said that my guests will probably

I actually for once had a super helpful employee at USPS and I think it's because he had just helped his daughter mail out her invites. But he kindly explained to me that the little hemp string (which I also used) could end up causing the machine to tear up your invites. So he encouraged me to get the bigger stamps and mark them non-machinable. Obviously yours made it through but he made me feel like it was a possibility they could tear and I didn't want to take that chance.

The PO is struggling to stay afloat. Most mail is done on the computer. I think that is what is making postal employees cranky.

If you have any extra invites, I would send one to yourself along with the others to see if it actually delivered with just having the $0.46 stamp.

I did not have this problem but it seems as if the lady had a rough day .Yay she should have been more nicer to you because you are the reason she has a job. But some time they forget that so you just smile.

Many people have confirmed receiving their invites, including people in Texas, Pensylvannia, and Maryland! My stepmom however, who lives a few blocks from me.. has said she hasn't received hers. So I guess if we don't receive some RSVPs back we will know why... I checked out the invites that my mom and grandma received and they looked fine. There was a little crease on the outside of the envelope from the string, but it didn't look bad at all.

Weight is only one factor in determining the cost to mail something. With the hemp string, your invites could get caught in the mailer sorters, thus the additional fee for hand processing. Also, $.46 is the cost to mail something from a metered machine (like at work), the cost to put a stamp on the same item is $.49 (rates increased as of January 2017). If the majority of your invites got delivered, I would consider yourself lucky because it sounds like you were short about $.24 for each item and by dropping them off in a box, they might have gone through the sorters and caused damage - so lucky on that point as well.

We took each of our invitations to the post office and each box was over $6 to mail. If it is not a single card there is always and additional charge.
