Post office vent!

MrsVoegs17, on July 6, 2017 at 1:46 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 30

My invitations consist of one 5x7 card that has the ceremony/reception details, and an RSVP card and return envelope, bundled together with a thin piece of hemp string. I weighed my invitations on our postage machine at work and found that the postage was $.46. Yay! I dropped approximately 60 invites in the post office drop box on Monday. The majority of the invites were for in town guests, who have told me they've already received them! Another yay! I go to the post office today to get more stamps to mail my remaining invites. 3 of the invites I had left to mail had an extra card for directions for some older out of town guests. I asked the clerk to just double check and make sure that the postage was still $.46. She picked up my invite, squeezed where the hemp string was, and said, you need another $.21 in postage because of this. I explained to her that I had already mailed out 60 invites and they had delivered and she got really snotty with me and said that my guests will probably

Now have to pay the additional $.21 for delivery. I am mortified, and I hope this truly doesn't happen. I asked for just the $.46 stamps and she refused to give them to me because it wouldn't be enough postage! Has anyone had this happen before? She says it's because it can't go through the sorting machine... but at work, we've ran stuff that's three times as thick through our machine and it still comes out at $.46. She also said that I may possibly get a bill in the mail for the additional postage needed for the other invites that went out if the recipients aren't asked/don't pay the additional $.21?!

Well that's the USPS for you. If nothing else changed I would mail them just like you did the first batch. The ones you put an extra card in, I would put the extra .21 on though since the weight is more.

ETA I read your second comment...omg. She refused to sell you the .46 stamps? I still stand by my original comment. If you get a bill in the mail for .21 cents then fine..make them pay for the postage, legwork and paper...I'll come back and pay in pennies..I'm petty like that though.

@FutureMrsE, I brought them back to work (this all transpired over my lunch break) and weighed them and they are still $.46 so I think I'm just gonna slap a stamp on them and put them in the drop box again. Just frustrating.. I'm like, damn lady who pissed in your Cheerios today?

I put fancy wax seals on mine and the lady did the same thing. I mailed them all out and only one was marked for additional postage. My friends mailman didnt enforce it though. So lame. Mine we also under weight.

I'm sorry you went through that but I have NEVER had a decent customer service at USPS.

That's why I did one 5x7 piece of cardstock with "RSVP on our website" info on the back of it and slapped a stamp on and called it a day. We got one returned to us and our friend said it's because her mailman is an asshole. Ok. Sounds like her problem not mine haha

I don't know where you live but around here (NJ) mail just gets returned to sender for insufficient postage. That's ridiculous!

@Christy, I hope that isn't the case. I would feel awful. I know that it's only $.21 but that still looks bad. Luckily a lot of my family has already confirmed they've received them with no issues. I'm concerned about out of town invites though.

It's not the weight, it's that the hemp string techinically makes them non-machinable by making it not a uniform size. If it's thin and the rest have already been delivered, then it's probably not noticeable to the machine, but that's why she said there would be a surcharge. Same thing happens with square invites and some banded ones.

I have never heard of charging the addressee for additional postage! In NY, the post office will return the envelope to the sender if there is insufficient postage.

That said, I have heard that string, ribbon or seals can increase the cost of postage because they will need to be manually sorted.

I had a string of twine around mine and a directions card. There wasn't a problem with mine being able to go thru the machine. She must of woke up on the wrong side of the bed. Im sorry this happened to you Smiley sad

Yeah she definitely must have been having a bad day. I'm having a lot of people tell me that they've received their invitations, even one in Maryland and I mailed them from Wisconsin!

I've never heard of a recipient having to pay the extra postage. It's MUCH more likely you'll get them back with a stamp that asks for the postage.

It might be too late, but just to let you know; all Wal-Mart's sell stamps at the registers & service desk. If the post office refused to sell you stamps, I'd go to Wal-Mart. Another thing, already being delivered, they can't make the guests pay the extra .21 there's no way to track them down lol.. If what she said is even accurate.

I mailed mine off this last Thursday. I was told the same thing...the string makes the invite too fat to fit through the machine. The man at the desk was super nice and just suggested some cute penguin $.21 stamps to add to the original postage. I was super glad that I had him check the invites though, otherwise it would have been a pain to backtrack and make them all correct.

I went to the post office the other day to weigh mine and with a 5x7 invite, 4x6 info card, 3x5 RSVP and envelope. They weighed exactly one ounce and the mail lady checked to make sure they'd be okay through a sorter. She said I should be fine, but she kind of made me nervous too because they were right on the edge of going over one ounce.

I have a string in ours too and it upped our price as well. It sucks but I think it's because of the sorting machine. :/

I just had the same issue. Except I took mine to the post office before I mailed them to be sure. The extra .21 stamp is because it's "not machinable" because of the twine... mine had it too... so frusterating
