possible pregnancy complications

Brittany, on October 9, 2010 at 1:42 AM Posted in Planning 0 8

I'm not pregnant and didnt plan on trying right away, but today i had an ultrasound done. (my sister's in a program for college and needed a 'dummy' so i volunteered). and her instructor found my right kidney in my pelvis, pelvic kidney! i really hope it doesnt cause complications or problems because i really want kids! im praying everything is okay. but it really sucks finding this out a week before my wedding just another thing to worry about..

0_o? If it would pose a problem, couldn't the doctor's preform surgery and move it back into place?

Btw, Pelvic Kidney sounds like an awesome name for a band, lol.

You should see your doctor as soon as you can after the wedding just to get all your questions answered by an expert. A cursory google search suggests that pelvic kidney can cause pregnancy complications, but I can't pin down exactly what, except that it might just increase risk of C-section because it can obstruct the birth canal. It's also possible that it's the kind of thing where, as long as the doctors know about it from the beginning, they have strategies to manage it (like my blood clotting disorder). So really, it's good that you know this now.

Also, no, doctors can't move a pelvic kidney "back" into place, because it's a birth defect where the kidney was formed in the wrong place within the body. It does look, as I said, like the main issue in pregnancy is that it makes labor difficult or even impossible; knowing that, one might plan a C-section to avoid the issue. (Here's one of those few cases where C-sections really are medically necessary!)

And I realize that people want to cheer Brittany up, but I've had scary health issues and had people try to make light of them, and it did not cheer me up at all. It just made me more upset and angry on top of it. So please keep in mind that people aren't always interested in joking about their medical conditions.

Most of the ppl I know who have this problem, have known since birth.. Like my sister because they do a full body exam... I'd go to the doctor and get a second openion. But if it does turn out that this is what you have then yes you can still have children, it will be a struggle because you are going to have to take some hormones to keep things from being so acidic but you can get pregnant. You most likely will have a C-Section though like Cabell said but that also depends on how sever your case is.

Luta has another good point--I once had a hematologist ask me, during my semi-yearly exam, if I knew I had a heart murmur. I knew damn well I DIDN'T because I've had several EKGs, so I was able to just raise an eyebrow and say I was pretty sure he was mistaken--which he sort of mumbled an admission of and then blamed "the way you were breathing." But if I hadn't known for sure he was talking out his butt, that would have freaked me out.

A second opinion would be the first step to take here; then if it turns out you do have a pelvic kidney, it's on record and they'll be able to work with you when you want to conceive. It may also raise issues of needing to be careful during certain activities, since misplacement of the kidney can leave it more vulnerable to injury according to some of the articles I found this morning.

Also keep in mind that my daughter looks like she has this condition but we know she doesn't. What happens is she get's so constipated that it pushes things around. That's why prior to doing checks such as this they make you drink nasty crap that makes you poop everything out and then you can't eat so you're starving. If you did none the above, then chances are you have some backed up bowel movement in there that needs to come out instead.
